Children's room renovation in Batumi: safety and room to grow
We do a children's room renovation in Batumi with several years in mind: sockets and lighting for the play area and for a future school desk from the start, safety shutters and an RCD, backing boards for wardrobes and wall bars, low-emission paint and furniture boards, and restrictors on the windows. All of this goes in before the finishing. Prices start from 475 ₾ per m² of floor for labour and rough-work materials, with furniture and finishing coverings extra.
from 475 ₾/m²labour and rough-work materials per m² of floor; finishing coverings and furniture extra. The final price is confirmed once agreed.
- Timeline: 3–4 weeks for a children's room of about 12 m² in white frame with ready-made furniture, plus a few days of airing before the child moves in
- Warranty: A 2-year warranty on work
Who it’s for
Your child is starting to walk, and the room has ordinary sockets near the floor and a chest of drawers that isn't fixed to the wall
The second bedroom in a 2+1 will become the children's room, and the renovation has to allow for a school desk
Two children share one room, and you need to fit in two beds and two places to study
The windows in the children's room start almost at the floor, and you want to keep the child away from the sashes
After the renovation you want the child to move in without the smell of paint and new furniture
What’s included
- a room plan to grow into: play area, bed, future desk
- sockets with shutters, and the room circuits through an RCD
- backing boards in partitions for wardrobes, shelves and wall bars
- fixing wardrobes, chests of drawers and shelving units to the wall
- opening restrictors and lockable handles on the windows
- painting with washable low-VOC paint
- a floor with underlay, and wall soundproofing if it is in the estimate
- an air conditioner pipe run, with the airflow going past the bed
- checking sockets, windows and fixings before the child moves in
Two layouts on one plan
We plan a children's room renovation in Batumi ten years ahead. In that time the finishes can be refreshed in a couple of days, but the cables in the walls stay where they were laid. The room will be a playroom, then a schoolchild's room, then a teenager's room, and the furniture in it will change two or three times.
So we draw two layouts on the plan: one for now and one for school age. We put sockets, a network cable and an outlet for a desk lamp by the future desk, even if there is a play mat there now, and by the bed we leave points for a night light and a charger. An extra socket in the wall costs less than a new chase a few years later, when the room already has its finishes.
Wall bars, a pull-up bar in the doorway or a loft bed are also decided at the start, because they need fixings in the concrete or backing boards in a partition.
Sockets, lighting and an RCD
In a children's room we fit sockets with built-in safety shutters: the contacts open only when a plug is pushed into both holes at once. A child quickly learns to pull out plug-in socket covers, but shutters always work. We fit more sockets than are needed now: an extension lead on the floor of a children's room is more dangerous than an extra point in the wall.
We connect the sockets and lighting of a children's room through a 30 mA RCD (residual current device): if current leaks through a person, it cuts power to the circuit almost instantly. If the developer's consumer unit has no such device on the room circuits, we add it when we upgrade the unit, as described on the page about consumer unit assembly. We sometimes fit the switch by the door lower than usual so that the child can turn the light on without help, and hide the lighting power supplies behind a hatch the child can't reach.
Furniture is fixed to the wall
A child can pull an unfixed chest of drawers, wardrobe or shelving unit over onto themselves by opening the top drawer or climbing the shelves. So in a children's room we fix all tall and heavy furniture to the wall, even pieces that seem stable, and the TV too, if there is one. Which fixings we use in concrete, block and plasterboard is covered on the page about furniture assembly and wall fixing.
A plasterboard partition holds a wardrobe and shelves only on backing boards inside the frame. So we fit them before boarding, for both layouts at once, the current one and the school one: for the top of the wardrobe, the shelves, the wall bars and a loft bed. Each backing board is marked on the diagram and photographed for the handover file.
We don't hang heavy shelves above the bed. For a bunk bed or a loft bed we check the ceiling height: a child on the top must be able to sit up without hitting their head on it.
Low-emission materials
The smell after a renovation comes from paint, adhesive, new furniture boards and stretch ceiling film. For a children's room we choose what smells less and airs out faster: water-based paint low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), furniture made from E1 emission class melamine-faced chipboard with edging on every edge, and solvent-free flooring adhesive. We don't use any material without a technical data sheet in a children's room.
The paint on children's room walls needs class 1 or 2 wet scrub resistance: felt-tip pen and modelling clay come off with a sponge, and a mark on a matt wall is touched up in patches. The order of work and the choice of paint are covered on the page about wall painting. A stretch ceiling is possible in a children's room too, but the film has a noticeable smell for the first few days, so after installation we air the room for longer. If you'd rather avoid that, we make a painted plasterboard ceiling.
Floor, walls and sound
Noise from a children's room goes two ways: down to the neighbours and through the wall into the parents' bedroom. The impact of jumping and dropped toys is best absorbed by a floating screed on a soundproofing mat; a rug takes away only part of it. A floor with a mat rises by a few centimetres, so it is easier to build it into an apartment in black frame, before the screed is poured, and to work out the thresholds at the same time. If the child goes to sleep before the adults turn off the TV, we line the wall shared with the bedroom with a frame and mineral wool, as described on the page about apartment soundproofing.
We lay a floor that isn't slippery and isn't cold stone, so that children can play on it barefoot: hard-wearing laminate or SPC vinyl. How they differ in a humid climate is explained in the comparison of laminate and SPC vinyl. The lower part of the walls by the play area and the desk is painted with the same washable paint or covered with panels that can be replaced one at a time.
Windows, balcony and air conditioning
On every sash we fit a restrictor that stops the window opening wider than a ventilation gap, and a lockable handle. We don't put the bed, desk or chest of drawers under the window: a child uses them to climb onto the windowsill. If the windows in the apartment are being replaced, we order the lockable hardware together with them; what to choose for Batumi is described on the page about window replacement.
The balcony door from the children's room is fitted with a lockable handle or a child safety lock. We hang the air conditioner so that the airflow goes past the bed, the play area and the top bunk, if there is one. For daytime naps, heavy curtains in a ceiling recess are useful.
How much a children's room renovation costs in Batumi
A square metre of floor in a turnkey children's room costs 475–695 ₾, and this covers labour and rough-work materials: electrics to a plan the child can grow into, backing boards in the partitions, wall levelling, screed and the ceiling. Finishing coverings and furniture are priced separately. Per metre, a children's room comes out more expensive than a bedroom, because a small area has more points, fixings and backing boards.
Refreshing a children's room with a cosmetic renovation, without new circuits, comes to 210–300 ₾ per m². Labour for wall painting in 2 coats costs 23–36 ₾ per m², with the paint and filler extra. A made-to-measure hinged-door wardrobe, including manufacture and installation, costs 900–1,200 ₾ per linear metre. Wall soundproofing, made-to-measure furniture and a sports frame on backing boards push the price up; paint instead of wallpaper and ready-made furniture bring it down. The final cost is set after the site measurement and once the estimate is agreed.
The check before the child moves in
We hand over a children's room against a separate checklist, and you can repeat any item on it yourself:
- we push a plug into every socket: the shutters open and close;
- we press “Test” on the children's room RCD, and the circuit switches off;
- we open every sash as far as the restrictor and try the lockable handle;
- we pull the top of the wardrobe, chest of drawers and shelving unit towards us: the fixing has no play;
- we check that the cables of lamps and night lights don't hang in loops near the floor.
You get the diagram of backing boards and sockets with photos in the handover file. You will need it a few years from now, when the furniture in the room is changed: it shows where you can drill and where a cable runs behind the finish.
Stages and timelines
-
A plan to grow into
2–3 days
We draw the layout for now and for school age, and mark the sockets, lighting and backing boards for both.
-
Rough electrics and pipe runs
3–5 days
We run cables to the bed, desk and play area, the air conditioner pipe run and a circuit through the RCD. The runs are photographed.
-
Walls, backing boards and ceiling
1–2 weeks
We level the walls, fit backing boards in the partition frames and build the ceiling with a curtain recess.
-
Finishing and floor
1–2 weeks
We paint the walls with washable paint, lay the floor and fit the shuttered sockets and the switches.
-
Furniture and windows
2–4 days
We assemble the furniture and fix it to the wall, and fit restrictors and lockable handles on the sashes.
-
Airing and handover
3–5 days
We air the room, check every socket, sash and fixing, and sign the completion certificate.
Local specifics in Batumi
In Batumi new builds the windows often start almost at the floor, and apartments are frequently on high floors. Mosquito screens stay up here from spring to autumn, and a window with a screen looks closed, although the screen won't hold a child's weight. So we fit restrictors on every sash in the children's room, including the balcony door.
In winter the humidity by the sea is high, and a children's room has a lot of textiles and soft toys that soak it up. Mould behind a wardrobe on an external wall is more dangerous here than in the living room: the child sleeps next to it. We place furniture with a gap from the external wall and plan in a fresh air supply and a separate socket for a dehumidifier for the damp season.
Many families live in their Batumi apartment only in summer and let it out the rest of the year. In that case we design the children's room to work as an ordinary bedroom out of season: calm walls, a wardrobe with a lockable section for toys and children's things, and sockets with built-in shutters that don't bother guests.
Materials and brands
For a children's room we use water-based paint with class 1 or 2 wet scrub resistance and a low VOC content according to the technical data sheet. Caparol makes low-emission interior paints, but which of them are on sale in Georgia at the time of purchase we check with the supplier. For Chromodomi and other brands we look at the technical data sheet of the specific paint. We make carcass furniture from E1 emission class melamine-faced chipboard with edging on every edge, including the hidden ones: an open edge is where the board both gives off formaldehyde and soaks up moisture.
We use sockets with built-in shutters, not plug-in covers. Legrand, Schneider Electric and ABB make such models. Class 32–33 laminate from Kastamonu or Kronotex with documents confirming its emission class will do, and we choose SPC vinyl by its specifications and certificate rather than by brand.
What makes up the cost
Timeline: 3–4 weeks for a children's room of about 12 m² in white frame with ready-made furniture, plus a few days of airing before the child moves in
- some work costs the same in a small room as in a large one, so a metre of a small children's room costs more
What raises the cost
- many sockets and lighting groups for the play area, desk and bed
- backing boards in partitions for wardrobes, shelves and a sports frame
- soundproofing of the wall shared with the parents' bedroom
- restrictors and lockable handles on every sash
What lowers the cost
- painted walls instead of wallpaper and panels
- ready-made furniture in standard sizes instead of made-to-measure
We prepare the exact estimate from measurements and photos. It’s free and comes with no obligation.

Questions and answers
How much does a children's room renovation cost per m² in Batumi?
A turnkey children's room renovation costs 475–695 ₾ per m² of floor. This covers labour and rough-work materials: electrics with sockets for the years ahead, backing boards for furniture, walls, screed and the ceiling. Finishing coverings and furniture are priced separately. A made-to-measure hinged-door wardrobe is priced per linear metre, at 900–1,200 ₾ including manufacture and installation, and labour for wall painting in 2 coats costs 23–36 ₾ per m².
We send a preliminary estimate based on a plan and photos within 24 hours on business days. The final cost is set after the site measurement and once the estimate is agreed.
How many days after the renovation can a child move into the room?
We go by two conditions rather than a number of days: the paint and adhesive have dried completely, and with the windows closed there is no smell in the room. Usually that is a few days after the last coat of paint, if the room is aired throughout. In the damp season paint takes longer to dry, and the wait gets longer.
New chipboard furniture smells for longer than the walls, so it is best delivered and assembled early, with the drawers left open. If the smell is still there after a week, we look for the source: most often it is the adhesive under the floor, the ceiling film or furniture with open edges.
Should sockets be fitted higher in a children's room?
We don't do that. From the age of about three a child can reach a socket even a metre up, and then lamps, the night light and the vacuum cleaner get plugged into extension leads, with cables lying on the floor. It is safer to keep the usual height and fit sockets with built-in shutters.
The sockets by a schoolchild's desk go above the desktop, so that chargers aren't pulled up from under the desk. By the bed we leave a point for a night light at bedside table height. Protection against current leakage comes from the RCD in the consumer unit, and at handover we press its “Test” button in front of you.
Can one children's room work for two children?
Yes, if each child has their own area. A bunk bed or a loft bed frees up floor space, but the top bed needs headroom, and the air conditioner airflow mustn't be aimed at the top bunk. Each bed has its own night light and socket, and each desk its own light on a separate switch.
If the children are different ages, the room is divided with a tall pressure-fit shelving unit or a sliding partition. Then we plan the lighting and sockets so that each half switches on separately, and the younger child can sleep while the older one does homework.
What lighting and night light does a children's room need?
We make the main light warm, 2700–3000 K, preferably with a dimmer: in the evening it is turned down, and the child falls asleep more easily. A schoolchild's desk needs its own lamp. For a right-handed child it goes on the left and for a left-handed one on the right, so that the hand doesn't cast a shadow on the exercise book, which is why we bring out a socket for the lamp on both sides of the desk.
We place the night light low, by the bed or near the floor on the way to the door, on its own socket or switch. We don't stick bare LED strip anywhere a child can reach it: the strip and its power supply go into a profile and behind a hatch.
