Children's room design in Batumi: room to grow, play and study

We plan children's room design in Batumi several years ahead: first open floor space for play and storage the child can reach on their own, then a schoolchild's desk, and if a second child arrives, two beds. The plan shows straight away which sockets, fixings and lighting each stage will need. A design for one children's room costs from 1,980 ₾. This is the designer's work, and furniture and renovation are priced separately.

What children's room design decides

We do children's room design in Batumi with more than one age in mind. The furniture in a children's room changes every few years, while the sockets, wall fixings and lighting stay where they are for ten years or so. The design answers two questions: how the room works now, and what will change in it when the child starts school and then becomes a teenager.

At the first meeting we ask the children's ages, whether the child naps in the daytime, whether you are planning a second child and whether the children will share a room. If the children's room hasn't been chosen yet, we decide that first on the plan of the whole apartment: a child's room is better kept away from the kitchen and living room, which are noisy in the evening, and close to the parents' bedroom. Sometimes this means rethinking the whole apartment layout.

A room to grow into: how it changes with age

We draw the layout for today and mark what will take its place later. The table shows what is usually needed at each age, and what of it we build into the walls straight away.

AgeWhat the room needsWhat we build in straight away
under 3a cot against an internal wall, a chest of drawers with a changing top, an armchair for an adult, open floor spacea socket for a baby monitor and a night light by the cot, a dimmer for the main light
3–6a play rug, low open shelves and boxes, a bed with a side railfixings for shelving units and wall bars
7–12a desk 100–120 cm wide and an adjustable chair, bookshelves, a wardrobe with clothes at the child's heightsockets and a desk lamp switch by the future desk
12 and overa wider bed, a desk for a laptop or monitor, more space for clothessockets above the desk, a point for a TV or games console if there will be one

The wall where the desk will stand in a few years is kept free of tall furniture from the start: moving a wardrobe that is fixed to the wall is harder than buying a new desk. How the crew fits the sockets and backing boards from these sheets is described on the page about children's room renovation.

Safety: what can be solved on the plan

Some of the risks in a children's room come from the layout, so on the plan we look at where a child can climb, what they can bump into and what could fall on them:

  • the corners of desks and chests of drawers at a toddler's face height are rounded, or we choose furniture with rounded corners;
  • we keep the floor by the window clear: a chest of drawers, bed or desk under the windowsill becomes a step up to the sash;
  • we don't put glass doors or mirrors low on the walls, and if a mirror is needed, we choose one with a safety film on the back;
  • we choose roller blinds and venetian blinds without loose cords, spring-loaded or motorised, and if there is a chain, we fix it to the wall with a tensioner;
  • drawers and doors get soft-close fittings so they don't slam shut;
  • all tall furniture is marked on the fixing diagram and fixed to the wall during assembly.

In the instructions for bunk beds and loft beds, manufacturers usually state that the top bunk is not for children under 6, and we keep to this limit. Above the top mattress we try to leave about 85–90 cm to the ceiling so that the child can sit up. This is a guide from our practice, and the bed model and the ceiling height give the exact figure. A design reduces the risks that can be seen in advance, but it doesn't replace adult supervision. Which fixings hold furniture in concrete and in partitions is covered on the page about furniture assembly and wall fixing.

Storage at the child's height

A child only tidies away what they can reach. Everyday things go low: open drawers and boxes on the floor and on shelves up to 90–100 cm, and clothes hooks at the child's shoulder height. The top shelves and top cupboards are for the adults. That is where clothes to grow into, seasonal things and toys put out of sight for a while go: a couple of months later they come out and get played with again.

We draw the wardrobe with an adjustable hanging rail. At first it hangs low and the child picks a T-shirt on their own, then it moves up to adult height and drawers take over the space freed underneath. We hang the bookshelves above a schoolchild's desk so that the right book can be reached sitting down, without standing on the chair.

A children's room for two

Two children in a room of 10–12 m² need two beds, a play area and, in time, two desks. We usually compare three layouts:

LayoutWhen it worksWhat we check
Bunk bedthe child on top is not younger than the age in the bed's instructions, usually 6; the room is narrowthe height above the top bunk, the ladder, a light by each bed
Loft bed and an ordinary beda desk or play area is needed under the loft bedlighting under the loft bed, since the main light doesn't reach there
Two beds in an L shapea room of 11–12 m² or more, children of different sexes or agesthe walkway between the beds and space for two desks by the window

Each child should have their own night light, their own shelf and their own drawer, even in a small room: there are fewer arguments when the boundary can be seen. The top bunk is closer to the ceiling and to the air conditioner unit. In summer the cold airflow easily reaches the pillow, and in winter, when the air conditioner is heating, it is warmer at the top than near the floor. So we check the position of the unit and the direction of the airflow on a section for both bunks.

Colour and materials for a children's room

We keep the walls and large furniture calm: light wood, white, warm grey, muted green or blue. Bright colour is left to things that can be changed in a day: textiles, the rug, posters, toy boxes. At five a child loves one thing and at nine another, and you won't have to repaint the room for a new favourite colour.

We choose a floor that is warm to the touch and draw the play rug on the plan straight away, so that no access hatch or threshold ends up under it. One wall can be painted with chalkboard or magnetic paint for drawings, and then the other walls stay clean for longer. We show the samples in person or on video in daylight, just as we do in materials selection for the whole apartment.

A children's room for yourself and for rental

Your own children's room can be as personal as you like: the child's drawings on the wall, favourite colours, a house-shaped bed. In an apartment let short-term, the second bedroom works both as a children's room and as a room for adult guests, so themed decor, wallpaper with cars and a house bed don't belong there. Calm walls and bright textiles that can be swapped suit any group of guests.

In case guests arrive with a small child, the measures are the same as in your own apartment: sockets with safety shutters, window restrictors and furniture fixed to the wall. A guest won't check whether the chest of drawers is screwed to the wall. What else a family with a toddler needs in a rental apartment is covered on the page about designing an apartment for rental.

How much children's room design costs in Batumi

A design project for one children's room costs from 1,980 to 3,000 ₾. It includes the measured survey, a layout for today and for the years ahead, 3D visualisation, drawings of the sockets with shutters, the lighting and the furniture, and a fixing diagram. The lower end of the range reflects our minimum order: a 9 m² room needs the survey, site visits and a set of sheets as well.

If the children's room is part of a whole-apartment design, it can be drawn within a technical design project (drawings without 3D, 78–96 ₾ per m² of the apartment), with 3D of this room added for 660–960 ₾. Made-to-measure built-in furniture, a room for two children and a second 3D with the school-age layout raise the price. Furniture and renovation are not part of the design price: a made-to-measure hinged-door wardrobe, for example, costs 900–1,200 ₾ per linear metre. The final cost is set after the measured survey and once the scope of the design is agreed.

Stages and timelines

  1. Getting to know the family

    1–2 days

    We ask the children's ages, their daily routine and your plans for the next few years, and measure the room and the adjoining walls.

  2. A plan to grow into

    4–6 days

    We draw the layout for today and for school age, marking what will change and what stays in place.

  3. Colour and mood board

    3–5 days

    We choose a calm base and bright items that are easy to swap. An older child gets to see two or three textile options.

  4. 3D for today and for later

    1–2 weeks

    We show the room in today's layout and, on request, the school-age version too.

  5. Drawings and fixing diagram

    1–2 weeks

    We prepare the socket and lighting plans for both layouts, the furniture fixing diagram, the drawings of built-in furniture and the materials list.

Local specifics in Batumi

In autumn and winter it often rains in Batumi for several days in a row, and children spend most of their active time indoors. In a children's room we almost always find space for wall bars, a doorway pull-up bar or a soft mat, and draw the fixings for them in the concrete wall in advance: a sports frame isn't hung on a plasterboard partition without backing boards.

In summer the daytime nap falls in the hottest hours, and south- and west-facing windows are baking hot at that time. A children's room needs blackout that covers the whole of the glass, and it is better to cool the room in advance and close the window for the nap: a wide-open sash with a mosquito screen lets in heat and street noise during the day.

After the beach, sand, wet swimsuits, inflatable rings and buckets come into the apartment. If there is no place for them by the front door or on the balcony, they end up in the children's room. We draw hooks and a box for beach things in the hallway or the bathroom, not in the child's room.

Materials and brands

Only materials with a technical data sheet go into the children's room materials list, and from the sheet we note what matters for this room: the paint's wet scrub resistance and VOC (volatile organic compound) content, the emission class of the furniture boards and the wear class of the flooring. We usually use Caparol or Chromodomi paint and pick the specific range from the data sheet at the time of purchase. We draw the furniture in E1 class boards with edging on every edge.

Handles on fronts at a toddler's head height are replaced with a handle profile or a recessed handle, so that nothing sticks out. Curtains, covers and an upholstered headboard are chosen in machine-washable fabric, and the rug with a short pile, because beach sand can't be shaken out of a long one. We specify Blum or GTV soft-close runners and hinges.

What makes up the cost

Timeline: 3–5 weeks for the design of a children's room of about 12 m² with 3D and a plan to grow into, if your comments on each stage come back within 2–3 days

  • the children's ages affect the set of sheets more than the floor area of the room

What raises the cost

  • made-to-measure built-in furniture: wardrobe, loft bed, platform
  • a room for two children with two beds and two workspaces
  • a second visualisation option with the school-age layout
  • a sports frame with a fixing diagram

What lowers the cost

  • ready-made furniture in standard sizes from a catalogue
  • a children's room as part of a whole-apartment design

We prepare the exact estimate from measurements and photos. It’s free and comes with no obligation.

Guarantees

Revision rounds for each stage are fixed in the contract.

If a backing board or socket built to the drawing ends up somewhere other than where the furniture needs it, the sheet is corrected in the way the contract sets out. When we carry out the renovation to the design, our work, including fixing furniture to the wall, has a 2-year warranty and the wiring we have laid in the walls and floor 5 years, while furniture and sockets carry the manufacturer's warranty.

Questions and answers

How much does children's room design cost in Batumi?

A design project for one children's room costs 1,980–3,000 ₾. The price includes the measured survey, a layout for today and for the years ahead, 3D visualisation and drawings: sockets with safety shutters, lighting, built-in furniture and a diagram of wall fixings. A room for two children and made-to-measure furniture take the price towards the top of the range.

This is the cost of the designer's work; furniture and renovation are priced separately. We give a preliminary price from the apartment plan within 24 hours on working days, and the final cost is set after the measured survey and once the scope of the design is agreed.

From what age can a child sleep on a top bunk?

In the instructions for bunk beds and loft beds, manufacturers usually state that the top bunk is not for children under 6. We keep to this limit, but it is only the minimum from the instructions. Whether your child is ready to sleep up there at six or at eight is for you to decide by watching them: a small child is still unsteady on the ladder when half asleep and can roll over the guard rail in their sleep.

For an older child we check three more things. The mattress should be no thicker than the mark on the bed, otherwise the guard rail ends up too low. Above the mattress we try to leave about 85–90 cm to the ceiling so the child can sit up. The bed is fixed to the wall if the instructions require it, and the approach to the ladder is kept clear.

How high should a schoolchild's desk and chair be?

Desk height is chosen by the child's height, not age. The guide we use in our designs: for a height of 130–145 cm the desktop is about 58 cm, for 145–160 cm about 64 cm, for 160–175 cm about 70 cm, and an adult desk of 72–76 cm becomes comfortable from a height of roughly 170–175 cm. We make the final check by sitting the child at the desk: feet flat on the floor, knees bent at roughly a right angle, elbows level with the desktop.

That is why we plan a height-adjustable children's desk for a schoolchild, together with an adjustable chair or a footrest, and these are readjusted once a year. The sockets above the desk are placed with some height to spare, so they can be reached whatever position the desktop is in.

How do you design a children's room in a small room of 8–9 m²?

In a room of 8–9 m² the main task is to free up the floor. A loft bed with a desk or play space underneath gives back the area of a whole bed, about 2 m². The wardrobe goes up to the ceiling by the door, and the shelves hang on the wall above the desk instead of a shelving unit standing on the floor. For a toddler who is too young for a loft bed, a bed with drawers can take the place of a chest of drawers.

A room like this needs exact dimensions: the walkways, the height under and above the loft bed, the open wardrobe door, the open window sash. We draw it in 3D with the furniture at its real size, and before you buy anything you can see where the child will play.

How do you take the child's opinion into account in the design?

We ask children from about four or five, but we give them a choice from options picked in advance. The walls, floor and large furniture stay with the adults and the designer, because they are rarely changed. The colour of the curtains, the bedding pattern, the rug, the lamp and the toy boxes the child can choose on their own from two or three options that suit the room.

We show older children the 3D, because they like seeing their room before the renovation. For a teenager, the colour often matters less than having a place of their own: a desk nobody else sits at, a shelf for their own things and a light they switch on themselves.
