Aluminium curtain walls in Batumi: where they are needed
A curtain wall is a glass wall on an aluminium frame of mullions and transoms that closes an opening taller than a storey or wider than an ordinary window. We install aluminium curtain walls in Batumi on the staircases of private houses, in double-height living rooms, on entrance screens, in shop and cafe fronts and in glazed links between buildings. Unlike a window, a curtain wall carries the wind on its own frame, and its glass can be fixed, opening and door panels in one system. If glass covers the whole facade of a building, that is facade glazing, with its own details at the floor slabs.
A curtain wall for a staircase or double-height room
A staircase with a two-storey glass wall makes the house bright and gives a view with every step. Here the curtain wall is fixed to the floor slabs and wall ends, and the transoms are set at the heights of steps and landings so they do not cut across the view at eye level. The lower panes at landings are laminated, and if the glass is lower than the balustrade, we add an inner guard. The staircase itself is designed together with the curtain wall, as described on the staircases page.
Entrance screens and shopfronts
An entrance screen includes a door in the same aluminium system, side panels and a top light over the door. For a private house we use a thermally broken profile and a door with a thermal break, multipoint lock and closer. For a shop or cafe the front must be strong and clearly visible from the street: we fit laminated glass that does not shatter when struck, and a panic exit door if the design requires it. How we build retail premises is described on the shops and retail pavilions page.
- one profile colour for the windows, doors and curtain walls of the building;
- a canopy or overhang above the entrance door so rain does not hit the threshold;
- a drainage channel in front of the threshold;
- lock, closer and door stay designed for wind off the sea.
Wind, sun and earthquakes
A tall curtain wall catches the wind like a sail. We size the mullions and the fixing centres for wind load and height, and make the fixings to the floor slabs with movement so the building frame can shift in an earthquake without loading the glass. A curtain wall facing south or west without solar control glass overheats the staircase and hall, so on those sides we use multifunctional glass or fit external louvres. Over the entrance we suggest a glass canopy, described on the glass canopies page.
Installation and maintenance
The curtain wall frame goes in once the openings and floor levels are ready, then it is glazed and closed with pressure plates and decorative caps. Junctions with the wall are sealed with tapes, and the bottom transom drains to the outside. Maintenance means an annual check of seals and drainage, door and closer adjustment and, by the sea, rinsing the profile of salt.

Local specifics in Batumi
A staircase curtain wall in a house by the sea often faces west or south, and in summer an unprotected staircase becomes the hottest place in the house. We specify solar control glass on such curtain walls from the start, and if the wall is tall, we add an opening top light so hot air can escape.
Shop and cafe entrances on Batumi's streets take driven rain as well as sand and salt. Thresholds and bottom transoms suffer first here, so we drain them to the outside, fit a canopy over the door and a channel in front of the threshold. On streets where the wind blows off the sea, doors get a stay and a closer rated for wind, otherwise the leaf can be torn off its hinges.

Questions and answers
How much does an aluminium curtain wall in Batumi cost?
A stick-system curtain wall installed costs from 780 ₾ per m², a shopfront or entrance screen from 780 ₾ per m², a thermally broken aluminium entrance door from 4 680 ₾. The price depends on height, glass and number of doors. The final cost is set after the survey, calculation and an agreed estimate.
How is a curtain wall different from facade glazing?
A curtain wall closes a single opening: a staircase, an entrance, a shopfront, a double-height room. Facade glazing covers a whole facade or storey of a building, runs past the floor slabs and needs fire stops. Structurally the systems are similar, but the scale and details differ. If a house needs both a staircase curtain wall and a glass living-room wall, we price them together, in one profile and colour.
Will a staircase with a glass wall be hot?
On the south and west sides it will, with ordinary glass. We specify solar control or multifunctional glass and an opening top light through which hot air escapes. For very sunny walls we add external louvres. Curtains inside a tall curtain wall hardly help: the heat has already passed through the glass and stays inside.
What glass does a shopfront need?
A shopfront gets laminated glass: when struck it cracks but does not shatter, and keeps the opening closed. For fronts on the sunny side we add a solar control coating so the goods do not fade. The entrance door is made in the same system, with a closer and lock.
How should a curtain wall by the sea be looked after?
Once a year check the seals and the drainage slots of the bottom transom, adjust the doors and closers. Rinse the profile with fresh water to remove salt, especially at the bottom where it collects. If water appears inside at the threshold, we check the drainage first and only then the sealant.
