Aluminium windows in Batumi: when a house needs them

Aluminium windows in Batumi are chosen when the opening is large and the frame must stay slim: a living room with a sea view, a door to the terrace, a glass corner, a window the full height of the storey. Aluminium is stiffer than uPVC, so a single sash can be wider and heavier while the frame stays thin. It does not mind summer heat, does not warp in the sun and keeps its colour. In private houses we fit only thermally broken systems: the inner and outer parts of the frame are separated by an insert that conducts almost no heat.

Thermally broken and cold aluminium

A cold profile without a thermal break is cheaper, but in winter the frame gets cold and is covered in condensation every morning. Its place is an unheated veranda or an outbuilding; it has no business in living rooms. A thermally broken profile is close to good uPVC for warmth and beats it on stiffness in large openings. A comparison of the two materials for warmth, salt and price is on the aluminium or uPVC windows page.

Coatings and hardware by the sea

Aluminium itself does not rust, but by the sea a poor coating develops a white bloom and pitting. So for houses near the shore we use a powder coat or anodising rated for sea air, with the same colour outside and inside, or different ones if the interior calls for it. The hardware is the first thing to give up by the sea, so hinges and locks come with an anti-corrosion coating. Once a year the frame should be rinsed with fresh water and the hardware lubricated.

  • a RAL colour, the same on windows, doors and curtain walls;
  • tilt-and-turn, sliding and fixed sashes in one frame;
  • solar control glass units for south and west windows;
  • concealed hinges and slim sashes for a minimalist facade.

Installation in a house with an insulated facade

A heavy aluminium window cannot simply sit on foam. We fix the frame to the wall with anchors, and if the facade is insulated externally, we set the window forward into the insulation on steel brackets. Then the reveal does not get cold and mould does not appear on it. The joint is sealed with tapes on both sides, and the sill flashing goes under the frame and under the render. How the insulated facade itself is built is described on the facade insulation page.

Doors, sliding doors and sun protection

From the same system we make entrance doors and doors to the terrace, so that the whole facade is in one profile and colour. For wide openings we fit lift-and-slide doors, described in detail on the sliding glass systems page. For a living room facing south or west we suggest external ZIP screens or roller shutters. Their boxes are built in during construction rather than hung on the facade later. Insect screens, blinds and roller shutters for existing windows are covered on the roller shutters, blinds and screens page.

How much aluminium windows cost

Thermally broken aluminium windows installed cost from 780 ₾ per m² of window. A floor-to-ceiling window with toughened and laminated glass from 1 110 ₾ per m², a lift-and-slide door from 1 500 ₾ per m², a thermally broken aluminium entrance door with glass from 4 680 ₾. Fitting a window within the insulation on brackets with tapes from 420 ₾ per window, reveals and sill flashings from 54 ₾ per linear metre. Aluminium roller shutters from 385 ₾ per m², motorised external ZIP screens from 750 ₾ per m². The final cost is set after the survey and an agreed estimate.

Local specifics in Batumi

Sea air in Batumi leaves salt on frames, and rain with wind does not wash it off everywhere. Salt lingers longest under the sill flashing and in the bottom corners of the frame, and that is where stains appear first on a poor coating. So we choose a coating class for marine atmospheres and advise rinsing the frame with fresh water each season and cleaning the drainage slots.

In summer south-facing walls get very hot, and dark uPVC frames can warp. Aluminium keeps its shape in the heat, so graphite and black frames on the sunny side are made in aluminium. For large south and west glass we include solar control glass or external screens from the start: without them a living room with a panorama overheats in summer.

Materials and brands

Thermally broken aluminium systems for windows, doors and sliding doors. Powder coating or anodising rated for marine atmospheres. Glass units with multifunctional, solar control or acoustic glass, toughened and laminated glass in the lower parts. Hardware with an anti-corrosion coating, anchors and steel brackets for fitting within the insulation, joint tapes, sill flashings.

Questions and answers

How much do aluminium windows in Batumi cost?

Thermally broken aluminium windows installed cost from 780 ₾ per m² of window. A floor-to-ceiling window from 1 110 ₾ per m², a lift-and-slide door from 1 500 ₾ per m². The price depends on sash size, glass and colour. The final cost is set after the survey and an agreed estimate.

Will an aluminium window be cold?

A thermally broken profile is close to good uPVC for warmth, and with normal humidity in the house there is no condensation on the frame. Cold aluminium without a thermal break really does get wet in winter, which is why we do not fit it in living rooms. Where the window sits in the wall also matters: in an insulated house we set it into the insulation layer.

Will it corrode by the sea?

Aluminium does not rust like steel, but by the sea a poor coating develops a white bloom and pitting. We use a coating or anodising rated for marine atmospheres and hardware with an anti-corrosion coating. Once a season the frame should be rinsed with fresh water and the drainage slots cleaned.

Can windows and sliding doors be the same colour?

Yes, that is the usual arrangement: windows, the entrance door, sliding doors and the staircase curtain wall are made in one system and one colour. If bedrooms get uPVC, we choose a foil to match the aluminium outside so the facade looks consistent. Inside the colour can be different, a light one to suit the interior.

How long do aluminium windows last?

The profile and coating last for decades if the frame is rinsed of salt now and then. The consumable parts are seals and hardware: they are adjusted and lubricated once a year and replaced after many years. A glass unit may lose its seal over time, and then only the unit is replaced, not the frame.
