Walk-in wardrobe design in Batumi: storage system, lighting and air

We do walk-in wardrobe design in Batumi: we find room for it in the layout, sort your things into sections, and draw the layout of shelves, hanging rails and drawers, the lighting with a motion sensor, the air path and a socket for a dehumidifier. The furniture maker builds the storage system from these sheets, and the crew gets the room ready. Design for a walk-in wardrobe of up to 8 m² costs from 960 ₾, and the storage system is paid for separately.

Where to find space for a walk-in wardrobe

Developers rarely hand over a ready-made walk-in wardrobe, so the space for one has to be found in the layout. Most often it is a corner or short wall of a bedroom, a dead end of the corridor, a small second room or a recess the developer left. We start walk-in wardrobe design in Batumi by working out how much will be left for the room next door: the walkway by the bed, space for bedside tables, the air conditioner, the window.

TypeWhen we choose itWhat to expect
Along one walla narrow room or a recess at least 1.2–1.3 m widethe easiest to ventilate, but little room for shoes
On two sidesa long, narrow room at least 1.8 m wide, entered from the short endtwice the storage with the same walkway
L-shapeda corner of the bedroomthe corner becomes dead space unless it is solved separately
U-shapeda separate small room, about 2×2 m or morethe most space, but two corners and a far end that the air reaches less well

If the walk-in wardrobe takes away the walkway by the bed, we show an option with a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe alongside it, and you compare both on the same plan. When a walk-in wardrobe is partitioned off from a bedroom, we draw both rooms on one sheet: the partition shifts the bed, the sockets at the headboard and the air conditioner, and this has to be settled together with the bedroom design.

An inventory of your things and arranging them by height

Before drawing any shelves, we count your things: long dresses and coats, shirts, folded clothes, shoes, bags, suitcases. As a guide, one adult usually needs 1.5–2 linear metres of system and a couple 3–4 m, but an inventory is more accurate than any rule of thumb. If you don't live in Georgia, we do the inventory on a video call, and how the whole project works at a distance is described on the page about a remote design project.

Height zoneWhat goes thereWhy
above 190 cmsuitcases, duvets, out-of-season clothes in boxesthey come down from a stepladder a couple of times a year
from 70 to 190 cmhanging rails and shelves for every dayeverything is to hand without bending
below 70 cmshoes, drawers for heavy things, a laundry basketheavy things don't have to be lifted, and shoes can be seen from above

Shoes go on angled shelves: one pair takes 20–25 cm of width, so a 90 cm shelf holds three or four pairs.

Air: where it comes in and where it goes out

We draw the air path in a walk-in wardrobe on the plan, just as we draw the lighting. The extractor goes diagonally opposite the door, in the far corner under the ceiling, so that air from the bedroom crosses the whole room instead of taking the short way from the bottom of the door to the top. How to bring air in through the door, and where to vent the fan if there is no ventilation shaft nearby, is covered on the page about walk-in wardrobe renovation.

If the extractor can only go above the door, we keep the system open, without closed boxes or back panels, so that air still passes between the clothes. Against an external wall we choose uprights that stand off the wall and slatted shoe shelves.

A dehumidifier gets its own spot on the floor for the winter, where clothes won't cover it, with a socket next to it. If there is a bathroom behind the wall, the water from the unit can be piped into the drain, and nobody has to empty the tank. Which unit to choose, and when damp needs a different cure, is covered on the page about dehumidifiers and dealing with damp.

Lighting and the mirror

Light in a walk-in wardrobe should fall on the clothes from the front. We move the strip under the shelf above the hanging rail to the front edge, or fit it vertically in the uprights: at the back it lights up the hangers, and the front of the clothes stays in shadow. If a light is behind you, you block it yourself.

We hang a full-length mirror where you can step back a pace and a half or two, and light the person rather than the glass: the downlight goes on the ceiling between the mirror and the spot where you stand in front of it. If the walk-in wardrobe is open to the bedroom, its lighting must not shine towards the bed at night: we hide the strip in a profile and position the sensor so that it doesn't go off when someone just walks past the opening.

A walk-in wardrobe for yourself and for rental

In your own apartment the walk-in wardrobe holds the whole family's things for every season. We design it from the inventory: first we decide whose things go where, then leave a couple of empty sections for whatever turns up in a year or two.

A long-term tenant arrives with a year's worth of things, and at a viewing a family looks first at where they will put them. A short-term rental needs a walk-in wardrobe less: a guest needs a rail for a dozen hangers and a stand for an open suitcase. Part of the room can then go to the owner, as a lockable cupboard for spare linen.

Common walk-in wardrobe mistakes

  • the walkway is under 60 cm, and a drawer won't open while someone is standing in front of it;
  • the drawers are by the doorway, and the door frame stops them opening;
  • the corner of an L-shaped or U-shaped system is left empty;
  • a hanging rail above a tall shelf ends up at 2 m, out of reach;
  • the light is behind you, and there is no way to light the mirror;
  • closed shoe boxes stand against a cold external wall, and the dehumidifier socket was forgotten.

The sheets you get

The walk-in wardrobe project includes a measured plan, an elevation of every wall with the sections, hanging rails, shelves and drawers, 3D, a lighting and socket plan, and an air path diagram with the fan and grilles. A system specification comes separately: it shows how many sections, rails and drawers of each kind to order, even if the system is bought from a shop as ready-made modules.

3D is included in the price: it lets you check how the system looks from the bedroom and how much room is left in the walkway. If the walk-in wardrobe is behind a solid door and the system is modular, a collage can replace the 3D, which is what we usually do in a whole-apartment project.

The crew needs the sheets before the furniture maker does: the backing for wall rails and hanging rails goes into the partition before it is boarded, and the cables to the strip and the sensor are run before plastering. Making and fitting the system is described on the page about made-to-measure wardrobes and walk-in wardrobes. If we carry out the renovation, the designer checks the backing against photos as part of designer supervision, before it is closed up.

How much walk-in wardrobe design costs in Batumi

Design for a walk-in wardrobe of up to 8 m² costs from 960 to 1,440 ₾ per room. The price is based on the area, but doesn't go below the minimum fee per room. It covers the layout of shelves, hanging rails and drawers, 3D, lighting with a motion sensor, the extractor and a socket for a dehumidifier. This is the designer's work: the storage system, the renovation and the appliances are paid for separately.

As a guide, a made-to-measure open system of shelves, hanging rails and drawers costs from 1,020 to 1,440 ₾ per linear metre along the wall, and a sliding-door wardrobe from 1,500 ₾ per metre. LED strip installation costs 34–38 ₾ per metre, and a domestic dehumidifier 840–1,200 ₾. A furniture maker usually makes their own 3D of the wardrobe as part of their own order, but it isn't tied to the walls, the lighting or the air path.

A U-shaped walk-in wardrobe with an island and a mirrored wall, its own extractor and lighting on every shelf costs more. A system along one wall costs less. The final cost is set after the survey and once the set of sheets is agreed, and the number of revision rounds is written into the contract.

Stages and timelines

  1. Survey and position

    1–2 days

    We measure the room or recess, look at the external walls and the nearest ventilation shafts, and work out what will be left for the bedroom.

  2. Inventory of your things

    2–3 days

    Together we count the long clothes, folded items, shoes and suitcases, and divide your things by person and season.

  3. System layout and 3D

    1–2 weeks

    We arrange the sections on the walls, choose the type of system and the doors, and show you the walk-in wardrobe in 3D.

  4. Air, lighting and sockets

    3–4 days

    We draw the air supply and extraction, the LED strip, the sensor and the sockets, and mark the backing for the system's fixings.

  5. Handover to the furniture maker and site foreman

    1–2 days

    We hand over the system specification and the sheets for the crew, and after the final measurement we check the dimensions with the furniture maker.

Local specifics in Batumi

Winters in Batumi are mild, and you need less warm clothing here than in Moscow or Almaty. What you need more room for is light clothes, shoes for the rain and the beach, towels and beach bags. Many owners live between two countries and keep a second set of clothes and their suitcases here, so we plan separate shelves for suitcases and for things left until the next visit.

Nobody airs an apartment that stands empty from autumn to spring, so before the system is ordered we decide what will stay in the walk-in wardrobe over the winter. The type of system depends on it: the owner's winter clothes hang on open rails by an internal wall, not in closed boxes by an external one, and the dehumidifier gets its own place with a drain for the water.

In apartments for long-term rental, the walk-in wardrobe often decides whether the apartment suits a family: tenants arrive with a year's worth of things, and two sliding-door wardrobes are not enough for them.

Materials and brands

Inside the system we choose a light-coloured carcass: dark clothes are easy to tell apart against it, and dust shows. The board is moisture-resistant, and the shoe shelves by an external wall are slatted metal, so that air passes underneath. The doors are chosen to match the bedroom: if the walk-in wardrobe is open to the room, it is closed off with frosted or tinted glass in an aluminium frame, painted MDF, or a full-length mirror on one of the doors.

The brand matters in the mechanisms that work every day: Blum or GTV soft-close drawer runners, and a pull-down rail for a high hanging rail with its load rating in the specifications. We choose a Midea, Xiaomi or Ballu dehumidifier for the size of the room and record its dimensions in the project, so that the space on the floor matches the unit.

What makes up the cost

Timeline: About 2–3 weeks to design a 3–5 m² walk-in wardrobe with an inventory of your things, 3D and an air path diagram; the furniture maker makes the storage system after the final measurement

  • the length of the walls with storage: each wall has its own elevation

What raises the cost

  • a U-shaped walk-in wardrobe with an island or a mirrored wall
  • a separate extractor with a boxed-in duct to the ventilation shaft
  • lighting on every shelf and in the drawers
  • two sides for two adults with different interior fittings

What lowers the cost

  • a system along one wall with no corners
  • a ready-made modular system from a shop instead of a made-to-measure one

We prepare the exact estimate from measurements and photos. It’s free and comes with no obligation.

Guarantees

The contract covers layout revisions and errors in the sheets.

The number of revision rounds included in each stage is written into the contract. If after the final measurement a section doesn't fit, the designer corrects the layout before the system is ordered, and the contract sets out in advance how errors in the sheets are put right and who is responsible for them. The storage system and the dehumidifier carry the manufacturer's warranty.

Questions and answers

How much does walk-in wardrobe design cost in Batumi?

Design for a walk-in wardrobe of up to 8 m² costs from 960 to 1,440 ₾. This covers an inventory of your things, the layout of shelves, hanging rails and drawers, 3D, a lighting plan with a motion sensor, the extraction layout and a place for a dehumidifier. The storage system, the renovation and the appliances are paid for separately.

A U-shaped walk-in wardrobe with an island and a mirrored wall comes out closer to the top of the range. We give a preliminary price from the apartment plan within 24 hours on business days, and the final cost is set after the survey and once the set of sheets is agreed.

Which is better in an apartment: a walk-in wardrobe or a wardrobe in the bedroom?

It depends on the space. Besides shelves, a walk-in wardrobe needs a walkway, so for the same amount of storage it takes noticeably more floor area than a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe. In a 10–12 m² bedroom a wardrobe usually makes more sense: the walkway by the bed stays, and it holds almost as much.

A walk-in wardrobe is worth it when there is a recess, a dead end of the corridor or a small room that nobody uses anyway. It has one more point in its favour: you can get dressed there without waking whoever is asleep. And there is one against it: without air supply and extraction it gets damp by the sea faster than a wardrobe does.

How do you divide a walk-in wardrobe between two people?

By side is the most convenient: each person has their own wall or half, with their own rails, shelves and drawers. We draw the fittings from each person's inventory, so the sides often turn out different: one has more long clothes, the other more shelves and shoes.

Things you use together stay shared: the mirror, the top shelf for suitcases, the laundry basket. If the walk-in wardrobe is a through room or narrow, one person's drawers mustn't get in the other's way, so we put them opposite shelves rather than opposite other drawers.

Where do suitcases and seasonal things go in a walk-in wardrobe?

At the top, on a high shelf, if the ceiling is about 3 m, or at the bottom in a separate section for a large suitcase. We make the top shelf deep enough for a suitcase lying flat, usually about 50 cm, and set its height by your largest suitcase. Seasonal things go into fabric covers or boxes with holes.

If you live between two countries and need your suitcases every couple of months, a bottom section by the entrance to the walk-in wardrobe suits them better, because lifting them down from two metres that often is awkward. A small suitcase goes inside a large one and needs no space of its own.

Can I buy the storage system from a shop rather than a furniture maker?

Yes. Modular systems on uprights are sold ready-made, and we arrange the sections on the walls using the catalogue sizes. A system like this is cheaper, arrives sooner and is well ventilated, but its widths are fixed, and in a recess of an odd size it fits with gaps.

A made-to-measure system is made to fit the recess exactly, with drawers, doors and lighting. In the project we state which option has been chosen and draw the backing, sockets and lighting to suit it. So the choice has to be made before the rough work: once the finishing is done, you can't swap one for the other without redoing work.
