Pool construction in Batumi: concrete, composite, overflow

We start pool construction in Batumi with questions: who will swim and for how many months, where the plant room goes, where the water will drain and whether machinery can get in. We build concrete, composite, overflow and infinity, indoor and rooftop pools. We include drainage and a relief valve, heating, disinfection and winterising from the start. A turnkey concrete pool from 2 340 ₾ per m² of water surface.

Pool construction in Batumi: where to start

Pool construction in Batumi starts with questions, not with the shell. Who will swim and for how many months of the year, will the house be let, is there room for a plant room, where will the water go when the pool is drained or the filter backwashed, can an excavator or crane reach the spot. The answers decide the pool type, size, equipment and budget. We build pools at new houses and existing ones, on level plots and slopes, on terraces and on roofs.

If the house is still at the design stage, the pool is best planned together with it: routes, the plant room and capacity in the main power supply go into the design at once. How this is done for the whole house is covered on the houses with a pool page. If the house is already built, we first check machinery access, the ground and space for the equipment.

Which pool to choose

TypeStrengthsWhat to consider
Concrete skimmer poolAny shape and size, long service life3–4 months of work, concrete access needed
CompositeReady-made factory shell, installed in a few weeksSize limited by the road to the plot, shape from a catalogue
Overflow and infinityWater level flush with the edge or with the horizonBalance tank, more pipework, higher cost
IndoorSwimming all year roundDehumidification and ventilation, a vapour-tight room
On a roof or terraceA view and space where there is no gardenSlab calculation, double waterproofing

For a house to let, owners usually choose a skimmer pool of medium depth: it is simpler to maintain, and guests do not need a diving pool. Overflow and infinity pools go where the view is everything: on a slope overlooking the sea or at a premium villa.

We size the pool from how it will be used. For swimming about and playing with children, a depth of around one and a half metres with a gently sloping floor is enough; for lap swimming, length matters more than width. The larger the water surface, the more heating, chemicals and cover cost, so extra square metres are paid for every season.

Location, ground and water

We choose the location by sun, wind and ground. South and west sides give warm water and a long season, while wind off the sea cools the water and carries leaves. The excavation must not undercut the house foundation, and by the sea and in low areas we allow for high groundwater: we lay drainage under the floor and fit a hydrostatic relief valve in the shell so an empty pool is not lifted. On a slope the shell sits in firm ground or on supports designed by a structural engineer; foundations on slopes are covered on the foundation on a slope page. Setbacks from the plot boundary depend on the zone, and we check them before the sketch.

Plant room and equipment

  • filter, pumps and panel in a plant room at or below water level;
  • heating with a heat pump that extends the swimming season;
  • disinfection by a dosing station or salt electrolysis;
  • underwater lights on safe extra-low voltage;
  • a dedicated electrical circuit with residual current protection and equipotential bonding.

We place the plant room close to the shell and away from bedrooms: filtration runs on a timer, and the pump can be heard through a wall at night. Heating the water with a heat pump works efficiently in our climate for most of the year; more on these units on the heat pumps page. Salt electrolysis suits a house where the owner is often away: no daily chemical dosing is needed, although pH still has to be checked.

Safety around the water

The pool surround and steps are in a non-slip material in a light tone so they do not burn feet in the sun. How to build the base and falls around the shell is described on the paving and paths page. If there are small children in the house or it is let to families, we advise a pool fence with a gate or an automatic cover that can bear a person's weight. The main drain gets anti-entrapment protection, and the depth changes gradually, without a sudden drop.

In winter and the off-season

On the coast a pool is usually not drained for winter but winterised: the water is lowered below the skimmers, the pipes are emptied and the pool is covered. So all pipes run with a fall to the plant room and drain valves are fitted during construction. In the mountains, where there are frosts, ice compensators are added. Summer maintenance and seasonal winterising can be handed to us; more on the pool maintenance page.

How much pool construction costs

A turnkey concrete pool costs from 2 340 ₾ per m² of water surface, and a turnkey 8×4 m pool from 75 000 ₾. A 6–7 m composite pool with installation and equipment from 51 000 ₾. An overflow pool from 3 180 ₾, an infinity pool from 4 140 ₾ per m² of water surface. A freestanding hot tub for 4–6 people from 33 000 ₾, a pool heat pump from 11 400 ₾, a salt electrolysis unit from 6 900 ₾. A pool design from 3 300 ₾, in-season maintenance from 600 ₾ a month. The final cost is set after a site visit, the design and an agreed estimate.

Local specifics in Batumi

The swimming season in Batumi is long, but an unheated outdoor pool is warm mainly in summer. A heat pump extends the season from late spring to mid-autumn, and a cover at night keeps the heat in and the leaves out. Humidity rarely drops below 70 %, so we ventilate the plant room and choose corrosion-resistant metal for the equipment.

Downpours here are heavy, and the water in the shell rises faster than you might think. The rain overflow is led to the plot's stormwater system, and filter backwash water goes to the sewer or a separate soakaway to the design, but never to a septic tank. On low plots by the sea groundwater is high, so we lay drainage under the floor and fit a relief valve in the shell.

Materials and brands

Watertight-grade concrete, reinforcement, waterstops in construction joints. Liquid-applied waterproofing with reinforcing tape. Glass mosaic or pool-grade porcelain tile, low-absorption coping stone. Factory-made composite shells. Embedded fittings, PVC pool pipework, sand or glass filters, pumps, heat pumps, dosing and salt electrolysis units. 12 V underwater lights, covers and tarpaulins.

What makes up the cost

Timeline: a concrete 8×4 m pool usually takes 3–4 months, a composite pool 3–5 weeks including the base

  • water surface area and depth

What raises the cost

  • an overflow or infinity design
  • a slope, high groundwater, engineered supports
  • heating, a counter-current unit and an automatic cover
  • premium mosaic

What lowers the cost

  • a skimmer pool on a level plot
  • a standard-size composite shell

Questions and answers

How much does pool construction in Batumi cost?

A turnkey concrete pool costs from 2 340 ₾ per m² of water surface, an 8×4 m pool from 75 000 ₾. A 6–7 m composite pool with equipment from 51 000 ₾, an overflow pool from 3 180 ₾ per m². The final cost is set after a site visit, the design and an agreed estimate.

Concrete or composite pool?

A concrete pool can be any shape and size and lasts for decades, but takes 3–4 months to build. A composite shell arrives ready and is installed in a few weeks, but its size is limited by what can travel down the street and its shape by a catalogue. For a standard pool at a house to let, composite is often the better choice; for a villa with a special shape, concrete.

Is pool heating needed in Batumi?

Without heating, an outdoor pool is comfortable mainly in summer. A heat pump extends the season from late spring to mid-autumn, and a cover at night keeps the heat in. For a house to let, heating is almost essential: guests come in May and in October too.

Can a pool be built at an existing house?

It can, if machinery can reach the pool site, or at least a crane for a composite shell. We check access, the ground, the distance to the foundation and space for the plant room. Sometimes part of the fence or paving has to come down, and we include that in the estimate from the start.

Chlorine or salt: which to choose?

In both cases the water is disinfected by chlorine. With salt electrolysis it is produced from salt right in the water, there is no daily dosing and the water feels softer. In the conventional system a station doses a ready-made solution. With salt, ladders and fittings are in stainless steel rated for salt water, and the coping stone is dense.
