Paving a yard in Batumi: what the surface depends on

Paving a yard in Batumi lasts if it has the right sub-base and water runs off it. Block paving laid on sand over clay sinks into ruts after the first winter of downpours, and stone without a fall grows a green film and turns slippery. So we choose the surface by three questions: what will drive on it, where the water will go and how it will look next to the house.

SurfaceStrengthsWhere it fits
Block pavingRepairable, many shapes and coloursPaths, terraces, parking for cars
Natural stoneDurable, ages beautifullyEntrance area, pool terrace, classic houses
ConcreteCarries heavy vehicles, even surfaceDrive, turning area, service yard
GravelInexpensive, lets water throughGarden paths, areas by a gazebo

The sub-base decides everything

  • we strip the topsoil and weak ground;
  • we lay geotextile so clay does not work into the crushed stone;
  • crushed stone in layers, compacted with a plate compactor;
  • a thicker sub-base or a concrete slab where cars drive;
  • edging along the border so the surface does not spread.

A footpath sub-base is thinner, a parking and drive sub-base noticeably thicker. If a concrete truck, septic emptying truck or gas tanker will drive in, the drive is built in reinforced concrete, with paving or stone on top if desired. How the plot is prepared before paving is described on the landscape works page.

Falls and water

Every surface is laid to a fall: away from the house, towards channels, towards the lawn. At the garage, gate and thresholds we fit channels with gratings so water from the hardstanding does not run into the house or under the gate. Where the area is large, water is collected into stormwater drainage, more on the stormwater drainage page. Cables to the gate and lights, irrigation pipes and stormwater are laid before paving, and under paths we leave ducts for the future.

Slipperiness and care

In a humid climate shady areas develop a green film, and smooth stone becomes slippery. By the pool, on steps and on the north side of the house we use stone with a rough surface or paving with an anti-slip texture. Around the pool the surface is also light in tone so it stays cool in the sun, more on the houses with a pool page. Once a year the paving is pressure-washed and sand is topped up in the joints.

Parking and carports

We set out parking for the actual cars, with room to open doors and turn. For a house to let, guest parking spaces are signed or marked with a different paving colour, and the entrance is lit. If there will be a carport over the parking, its posts are built into the sub-base in advance, more on the carports page.

How much paving costs

A gravel path with geotextile and edging costs from 72 ₾ per m². Block paving with sub-base and edging from 125 ₾ per m², natural stone on a concrete bed from 275 ₾ per m². A reinforced concrete hardstanding or drive from 150 ₾ per m². Edging set on concrete from 54 ₾ per linear metre, a drainage channel with grating from 160 ₾ per linear metre. The final cost is set after measuring and an agreed estimate.

Local specifics in Batumi

In Batumi paving suffers more from water than from frost. Clay under the paving softens after downpours and sinks if the sub-base is thin and has no geotextile. So we make the sub-base thicker than in dry regions and always lead water off the surface into channels and stormwater.

Humidity and shade produce a green film on stone and paving, especially on the north side of the house and under trees. Here we choose rough surfaces and slightly steeper falls. By the sea salt leaves streaks on light stone, so the surface by the pool and on the terrace is rinsed with fresh water every season.

Materials and brands

Vibro-pressed concrete paving of different thicknesses for pedestrian and vehicle areas. Natural stone: granite, limestone, travertine, slate. Reinforced concrete for the drive and parking. Gravel and decorative chippings for garden paths. Edging, geotextile, crushed stone, sand and dry mixes for the sub-base, channels with gratings, ducts for cables. Anti-slip impregnations for stone by the pool and on steps, polymeric jointing sand that downpours do not wash out.

What makes up the cost

Timeline: paving a yard of 100–200 m² usually takes 2–5 weeks including the sub-base

  • paving area and type of sub-base

What raises the cost

  • natural stone instead of block paving
  • heavy vehicles and a concrete sub-base
  • a complex pattern and a lot of cutting
  • a slope and retaining edging

What lowers the cost

  • gravel garden paths
  • a simple paving layout on a level area

Questions and answers

How much does paving a yard in Batumi cost?

A gravel path with edging costs from 72 ₾ per m², block paving with sub-base and edging from 125 ₾ per m², natural stone on concrete from 275 ₾ per m², a reinforced concrete hardstanding from 150 ₾ per m². The final cost is set after measuring and an agreed estimate.

Why does paving sink?

Most often the sub-base is too thin or was not compacted, with wet clay beneath it and no geotextile. Another cause: water from the hardstanding goes under the paving instead of into channels. We relay it with a new sub-base, falls and edging, otherwise it will all happen again within a season.

Which surface will take a car?

Paving of vehicle-grade thickness on a thick crushed stone sub-base carries cars. For trucks, a gas tanker and a septic emptying truck the drive is built in reinforced concrete, with paving or stone on top if desired. Thin garden paving cracks under a car.

What should go around a pool?

Stone or paving with a rough surface that is not slippery when wet, and light in tone so it does not burn feet in the sun. Travertine and limestone work well. The surface falls away from the pool so water from the edge does not run back into it.

How should paving be looked after?

Once a year pressure-wash it, top up sand in the joints and clean the channels. In shady spots the film is removed with a special cleaner. Stone is not treated with salt or aggressive chemicals. Sunken paving is relaid locally without touching the whole surface.
