Glass balustrades in Batumi: where they go
A glass balustrade does not block the view, which is why by the sea it is chosen more often than metal railings. We fit glass balustrades in Batumi on terraces and balconies of private houses, on roof terraces, on staircases and double-height galleries, and around pools. A balustrade is first of all there to stop people falling and only then to dress the facade. So every balustrade is calculated for height, load and fixing rather than picked from a picture.
Fixing methods
| System | What it looks like | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Base channel | The glass stands in an aluminium channel fixed to the slab | Terraces, roofs, staircases, pools |
| Standoff fixings | The glass is held by round fixings on the slab edge | Balconies and galleries where the floor must stay clear |
| Posts with clamps | Panes between metal posts | Long balustrades, staircases, budget options |
A base channel is the most reliable and neatest: the glass is held along its whole bottom edge, and the channel can be recessed into the floor or hidden behind cladding. Standoff fixings leave the floor clear and look lighter, but need a strong slab edge.
Which glass and what height
Balustrades get only laminated glass made of toughened panes. If one pane cracks, the second pane and the interlayer hold the sheet in the opening, and nobody falls. The laminated thickness is chosen for the balustrade height and load: one on a private terrace, another on the terrace of a guest house or cafe where many people gather at the rail. We make balustrades at least 1 m above the finished floor, and higher over large drops and in commercial buildings, as the design requires.
- laminated toughened glass, never single glass;
- a top handrail on tall balustrades and wherever children walk;
- polished edges without chips;
- a gap under the glass that a child cannot squeeze through.
Fixing to the slab and water
A balustrade holds exactly as well as the slab beneath it. The channel is fixed with chemical anchors into concrete, not into screed, insulation or stone cladding. On terraces and roofs the waterproofing stays under the channel, so the fixing details are designed together with it, so that anchors do not pierce it and water does not get into the slab. How such a roof is built is described on the roof terrace page. The channel has drainage holes so water from the terrace does not stand under the glass.
Staircases and pools
On a staircase the glass balustrade follows the pitch, the glass is cut to the step of the treads, and the handrail is set at a comfortable height for the hand. We design house staircases together with the balustrade, more on the staircases page. Around a pool a glass fence with a gate keeps children from reaching the water without adults while keeping the view open. How we build houses with a pool is described on the houses with a pool page.

Local specifics in Batumi
By the sea, metal railings without a good coating rust within a few seasons, while glass and aluminium cope with salt easily. Fixings and handrails are made of marine-grade stainless steel: ordinary stainless steel gets rusty spots by the sea. The glass and channel are rinsed with fresh water every season, otherwise salt leaves matt streaks on the glass.
On open terraces on upper floors the wind off the sea presses on a glass balustrade like a sail. We allow for this in the laminated thickness and anchor spacing. Batumi lies in a seismic zone, so the channel is fixed only to a concrete slab or beam, never to cladding or light partitions.
Materials and brands
Laminated glass of two toughened panes with a strong interlayer, polished edges. Aluminium base channels for slab, recessed or edge mounting, standoff fixings and posts in marine-grade stainless steel. Chemical anchors, gaskets and wedges for fixing the glass. Stainless steel or aluminium handrails, sealants for the details. Decorative channel covers to match the windows and slab-edge cladding if the channel is edge-mounted.

Questions and answers
How much do glass balustrades in Batumi cost?
A laminated glass balustrade in a base channel installed costs from 930 ₾ per linear metre, on standoff fixings from 1 110 ₾, a staircase balustrade from 990 ₾ per linear metre. A stainless steel handrail from 145 ₾ per linear metre. The final cost is set after the survey, calculation and an agreed estimate.
How safe is a glass balustrade?
It is safe if the glass is laminated toughened glass and the fixing is calculated for the load. When struck, laminated glass cracks but the interlayer and the second pane keep it in the channel. We do not use single toughened glass in balustrades: when it breaks it shatters completely.
Is a handrail needed on top of the glass?
On tall balustrades, on staircases and wherever there are children, we suggest a handrail: it is comfortable to hold and ties the panes together. On a private terrace with a small drop you can do without a handrail if the laminated thickness is chosen by calculation.
Can glass balustrades be fitted to an old balcony?
They can, if the balcony slab is in good condition. First we check the concrete and reinforcement at the edge, especially by the sea, where old balconies suffer from corrosion. If the slab edge is damaged, we repair it first and then fit the balustrade. Fixing to cladding or screed is not allowed.
How should a glass balustrade by the sea be cleaned?
Once a season with fresh water and a mild cleaner, then dry, so salt does not leave streaks. Outside at height the glass is cleaned from a lower terrace or from a lift. The channel and drainage holes are cleared of sand, and the fixings inspected once a year.
