Fireplace installation in Batumi: electric and bioethanol fireplaces and surrounds

Fireplace installation in Batumi apartments usually means an electric or bioethanol fireplace: neither needs a chimney, whereas a wood-burning fireplace in an apartment building needs a chimney and the building's approval. A ready-made electric fireplace with surround, installed, costs from 3,360 ₾. If you need a surround made to fit the wall or a recess for a cassette, we build it from plasterboard and clad it in stone or tiles. For a bioethanol fireplace we check the ventilation and the clearances to furniture against the instructions.

What kind of fireplace can go in an apartment

First we decide where the smoke will go. An apartment in a multi-storey building usually has no chimney of its own. The building's ventilation shaft is designed for air from kitchens and bathrooms, not for hot flue gases, and it is connected to the neighbouring apartments, so we don't connect a firebox to it. In apartments we usually install fireplaces that give off no smoke: electric and bioethanol.

We don't touch gas pipes: whether a gas fireplace can be installed, and on what terms, is decided by the gas company, and you need to ask them before the design stage.

A wood-burning fireplace in a private house

We install a wood-burning fireplace with a chimney in a private house, and only to a design. The firebox needs a base that can carry its weight. The chimney runs up to the roof and passes through the floor and the roof in a non-combustible sleeve, and combustible structures nearby are covered with a heat shield. The fireplace also needs an outside air supply, otherwise in a house with airtight windows it smokes into the room. The fireplace and chimney go into the design before the rough stage, together with the interior finishing of the house, and are priced from that design.

Electric fireplace: surround, recess and electrics

We build the surround on site from plasterboard on steel profiles to the dimensions of the chosen insert, so the model is fixed before work starts: each cassette has its own recess dimensions, grille positions and cable entry point. The frame is described on the page about plasterboard structures, and here we cover only what the fireplace needs.

  • the socket goes inside the surround at the side, so that it can be reached once the insert is taken out;
  • a fireplace with a heater, usually up to 2 kW, is connected to a dedicated circuit with its own breaker in the consumer unit, with no extension leads;
  • in a closed surround we leave air openings as the insert's instructions require;
  • reinforcement for the cladding, a shelf and a TV is built into the frame.

The circuit from the consumer unit is run together with the rest of the electrical installation and photographed before it is closed up. The surround is clad, for example in decorative stone or tiles, after the insert has been test-fitted in the recess.

Bioethanol fireplace: ventilation, fuel and clearances

Bioethanol burns without smoke, but it really does burn: the flame takes oxygen from the room and gives off carbon dioxide and water vapour. We take the minimum room volume and burn time from the instructions for the specific burner. The room needs working air supply and extraction, as described on the page about apartment ventilation.

The clearances to curtains, a shelf, a TV, the ceiling and furniture are also set by the instructions, and we measure them with a tape during installation. The recess for the burner is built from non-combustible materials. We don't put the fireplace in the path of the air conditioner's airflow or by the balcony door, because a draught knocks the flame about.

The fuel rules are simple, but they are the ones broken most often. Refill only a burner that has cooled down, and only with bioethanol made for fireplaces, never with lighter fluid. Wipe up any spilt fuel and don't light the fireplace until it has dried, and keep the can closed, away from the burner and out of children's reach.

A fireplace in an apartment for short-term rental

For an apartment let by the day, we recommend an electric fireplace. Guests change every few days, and an open flame would have to be refuelled by people seeing the burner for the first time. An electric fireplace gives the same flame picture in the listing photos and never needs refuelling. Other solutions for such apartments are collected on the page about renovating apartments for short-term rental.

How much fireplace installation in Batumi costs

The price table has two different surrounds. An electric fireplace with surround, installed, from 3,360 to 5,160 ₾, is a ready-made set: the insert already sits in the manufacturer's surround, and we assemble, position and connect it. A plasterboard fireplace surround or recess, with cladding, from 3,120 to 4,800 ₾, is a structure we build on site to the dimensions of the wall, and the insert isn't included in this price.

For such a surround people usually choose a built-in cassette insert, which costs from 6,240 to 10,300 ₾ as equipment, and fitting it into the finished recess costs from 240 to 360 ₾. A bioethanol fireplace, installed, comes to 3,720 to 6,000 ₾. Heavy stone cladding, a solid wood shelf, lighting and a new circuit from the consumer unit push the price up. The final cost is set after the site measurement and once the estimate is agreed.

What we check when handing over a fireplace

  • the surround is level, the cladding and joints are intact, and the shelf doesn't flex under your hand;
  • the insert comes out of the recess, and the socket behind it can be reached;
  • the heater works in all modes, the grilles are clear, and the surround around it doesn't overheat;
  • for a bioethanol fireplace, the clearances to curtains, shelf and ceiling match the instructions, and the burner sits level.

We record the insert model, the circuit diagram and the positions of the fixing pads in the handover file, and leave the instructions and a short user guide by the fireplace.

Stages and timelines

  1. Inspection and choice of fireplace

    1–2 days

    We look at the wall, the consumer unit and the ventilation, check the building's rules, and choose the type of fireplace and the insert model.

  2. Surround drawing

    2–3 days

    We draw the surround around the insert's dimensions: the recess, grilles, socket, shelf, cladding and the TV position.

  3. Electrics and frame

    2–3 days

    We run the circuit from the consumer unit, build the frame with reinforcement, and photograph the cable before it is closed up.

  4. Boarding and cladding

    4–7 days

    We board the frame, build the recess for a bioethanol burner from non-combustible boards, skim it, and clad it in stone or tiles.

  5. Installing the insert

    1 day

    We install the insert or burner and check the clearances, the modes and how hot the surround gets.

  6. Handover

    1 day

    We show the fireplace working on site or by video, leave the instructions and a short user guide, and record the model in the handover file.

Local specifics in Batumi

Winter in Batumi is mild, and fireplaces here are put in for evenings by the fire rather than for heating: apartments are heated by air conditioners or a boiler. So not everyone needs the heater in an electric fireplace, and a convincing flame and a quiet fan matter more.

A bioethanol fireplace adds water to the air. A litre of bioethanol weighs about 0.79 kg and, when it burns, gives off roughly 0.9 kg of water as vapour. In an apartment by the sea, which is damp enough in winter already, condensation on the windows is more noticeable after an evening by the fire, so we don't install a bioethanol fireplace without working air supply and extraction. Electric fireplaces with a water vapour flame effect also release moisture, and for a damp apartment we more often recommend models with an LED flame effect.

In some buildings the mains voltage jumps, and built-in cassettes have sensitive electronics. On such a circuit we fit surge protection, chosen together with the consumer unit.

Materials and brands

The surround frame is built on Knauf profiles and boarded with plasterboard, with fire-resistant board above the heater grille of an electric fireplace. The recess around a bioethanol burner is built from the non-combustible boards its instructions allow: ordinary plasterboard doesn't go there. The cladding is non-combustible: decorative stone, clinker, porcelain tiles or plaster. Tiles and stone are fixed with Ceresit or Mapei cement-based adhesive, and we check that the adhesive can take the heat against the insert's instructions.

We choose the fireplace brand by its service: whether there is a dealer in Georgia who can order a replacement remote control or burner. For a bioethanol fireplace we check that it has a lid for putting out the flame and overfill protection, and for an electric fireplace, a mode without heat and how loud the fan is.

What makes up the cost

Timeline: 1 day to fit an electric fireplace into a ready-made surround; 1.5–2 weeks for a plasterboard surround with cladding and the insert installed

  • the insert model sets the dimensions of the recess and the surround

What raises the cost

  • a built-in cassette instead of a fireplace with a ready-made surround
  • a surround made to your dimensions, with stone cladding and a shelf
  • a bioethanol fireplace: a recess of non-combustible materials and a ventilation check
  • a new circuit from the consumer unit and frame reinforcement for a TV

What lowers the cost

  • a wall-mounted or freestanding electric fireplace without a surround
  • fitting the insert into a ready-made recess or surround

Guarantees

A 2-year warranty on the surround, its cladding and the installation.

If the cladding comes away, the surround cracks or the insert stops working because of our installation, we put it right at our own expense. The circuit from the consumer unit and the cable in the wall, if we laid them, carry the 5-year warranty on concealed wiring. The insert, burner and remote control carry the manufacturer's warranty, and damage from unsuitable fuel or blocked grilles isn't covered.

Questions and answers

How much does an electric fireplace with a surround cost in Batumi?

A ready-made electric fireplace with the manufacturer's surround, installed, costs from 3,360 to 5,160 ₾. A budget wall-mounted or freestanding electric fireplace, which goes in without a surround, costs from 715 to 1,080 ₾ as equipment.

A plasterboard surround made to your dimensions, with cladding, costs from 3,120 to 4,800 ₾; the insert for it is bought separately, and fitting the insert into the finished surround costs from 240 to 360 ₾. If you have already chosen the insert, send us its model and a photo of the wall, and you'll get a preliminary estimate within 24 hours on business days. The final cost is set after the site measurement and once the estimate is agreed.

Can a wood-burning fireplace be installed in a new-build apartment?

It usually comes down to the chimney: most apartments don't have one. The building's ventilation shaft isn't suitable for smoke, and a new flue through the facade or the roof needs a design and the building's consent. If the building was built with chimneys for the apartments, we check the installation conditions with the management company and the developer before you buy a firebox.

The only real fire without a chimney is a bioethanol fireplace, and it needs good ventilation. If what matters is the look of the flame rather than the burning itself, an electric fireplace is the safer choice.

Can a TV be hung above a fireplace?

Above an electric fireplace, yes, if the warm air from the heater doesn't blow straight at the screen. We look at where the model's grille is, at the bottom front or on top, and take the clearance from the instructions of both appliances. If space is tight, the heater simply isn't switched on, and only the flame effect is used.

We don't recommend hanging a TV above a bioethanol fireplace: hot air rises above an open flame, and the electronics overheat. For the TV we build reinforcement into the surround in advance and bring a socket and a cable channel out behind it.

Does an electric or bioethanol fireplace heat the room?

An electric fireplace heats if it has a heater: usually up to 2 kW, like a household fan heater, which will warm an average-sized room in a Batumi winter. Without the heater it only shows the flame and uses very little electricity.

A bioethanol fireplace gives real heat from the flame, but it can't replace heating: the burner isn't left unattended, and the burn time is limited by the amount of fuel. For an apartment by the sea we see a fireplace as an addition to air conditioners or a boiler, not as a heat source for the whole winter.

Does a bioethanol fireplace need a chimney?

No, when it burns properly, bioethanol gives off no smoke or soot. But everything the flame releases stays in the room: carbon dioxide and vapour leave only through the ventilation. If the windows are shut all winter and the only extraction is in the bathroom, we fit an air inlet vent before you buy the fireplace, and check the room volume against the burner's instructions.

A faint smell is normal when lighting and putting out the flame. If the fireplace leaves soot or smells all the time, we check the fuel and the air movement in the room: often the flame is disturbed by a draught from a window or the air conditioner's airflow.
