Shop design in Batumi: the customer's route and the shop window

We design shops in Batumi around your goods and your customers: where people slow down after the entrance, how they move through the sales floor, where the till, fitting rooms and stockroom go, what the window shows by day and in the evening. The project includes the sales floor layout, the shop window, lighting on the goods, 3D and working drawings with retail furniture, and we design showrooms the same way. From 93 ₾ per m²; this is the designer's work, and equipment, the sign and the renovation are priced separately.

Shop design starts with the goods

For shop design in Batumi we first look at the product range and how people buy it. Clothes are touched and tried on, groceries are picked up quickly from a list, and jewellery is examined with a sales assistant at the display case. This decides how much stock sits on the sales floor and how much in the stockroom, whether fitting rooms are needed and where the assistant stands.

Then we calculate the display: how many metres of shelves and racks the range and the seasonal collection will take, and how much stock to keep on the floor. If the equipment supplier or head office has sent their own plan, we check how it fits into the real premises with their columns and risers. The general procedure for working with a shopping centre and the timing for the opening are described on the page about commercial interior design.

The customer's route, the till and the stockroom

For the first few steps after the door, people adjust to the light and don't look at the shelves yet, so we leave the area right by the entrance more open. Further in, at eye level, we put new arrivals and the seasonal offer, and move the goods that people come in for specifically towards the back. On the way there the customer walks past everything else.

The till stands closer to the exit, but its queue must not block the entrance or run into a shelving unit. The counter needs room for the card terminal, the receipt printer and bags. From behind the till the assistant can see the whole sales floor, including the fitting rooms and the far corner.

We draw the aisles wide enough for two people with bags to pass each other, and in a grocery shop a trolley and a pushchair as well. We keep the route for goods from unloading to the stockroom separate from the sales floor if the premises allow it: boxes carried through the shop during opening hours get in everyone's way.

A shop window that can be seen from the pavement

A passer-by notices a shop window on the move, a few steps away, so the first thing we choose is its type. An open window shows the whole shop and suits a small sales floor with a neat display. A closed window, with a backdrop, becomes a stage for one composition and hides the till and the stock shelving from the street.

We draw the window depth, platforms and hanging points so that the display can be changed without a stepladder next to fragile glass and without drilling new holes: a lighting track in the window ceiling, sockets in the platform, hooks for hanging. The window lighting is brighter than the sales floor, otherwise in daytime the glass reflects the street and the goods can't be seen.

How to build a warm shop window without condensation and which profile to choose is covered on the page about shop renovation. In the design project we show the window in 3D together with the frontage and the sign, and the same sheet goes for approval by the shopping centre or residential complex.

Lighting suited to the range

We draw the lighting from the display plan, once the racks and shelves are already on the drawing. Goods on the wall are lit from above and slightly in front, so that the upper shelves don't cast shadows on the lower ones, and the main display gets fittings brighter than the general background: the eye goes where it is lighter. In a grocery shop we choose the colour temperature by department: warm light suits the bakery, neutral light suits vegetables and fish.

We check glare separately. A fitting seen from the aisle at a sharp angle dazzles the customer, and over glossy packaging it leaves a bright spot instead of the label, so we specify the tilt of each group on the drawing. A detailed illuminance calculation and evening scenes can be ordered separately as a lighting design project.

Retail furniture, style and sound on the sales floor

Shelving and tables come either ready-made from a supplier or made to measure from our drawings. Ready-made equipment is quicker and cheaper, but in premises with columns and recesses it leaves empty corners. Made-to-measure furniture fills them and carries the brand style; for it we issue separate sheets with dimensions, materials and fixing to the wall or floor.

We keep the brand colours to a few elements: the till counter, the window backdrop, the background behind the main display. The rest of the sales floor stays neutral, so that the goods are brighter than the walls.

A sales floor of porcelain tiles, glass and bare concrete bounces music and voices around, and by evening this tires both the assistant and the customer. An acoustic ceiling over the till, textiles in the fitting rooms and soft pouffes by the mirrors noticeably reduce the echo. In a showroom a conversation with a customer lasts longer, and quiet matters more there. How a showroom is also prepared for changing displays is described on the page about showroom renovation.

How much shop design costs in Batumi

A design project for a shop or showroom costs from 93 to 130 ₾ per m². The price covers the sales floor and the customer route, the shop window, lighting, 3D and working drawings. This is the designer's work: retail equipment, the sign and the renovation are priced separately, and a shop renovation with materials costs from 780 ₾ per m².

If you first need to show the idea to the landlord or partners, an interior concept ahead of the full project costs from 1,680 ₾. An extra 3D view costs from 210 ₾, and lighting design with calculations and selection of light fittings from 20 ₾ per m². Of the renovation lines, the ones that depend most on the design are an aluminium and glass shopfront or entrance, from 780 ₾ per m², and lighting track installation, from 27 ₾ per linear metre.

Made-to-measure retail furniture, a closed window with platforms and a shopping centre's requirements for the drawing package push the project price up. We give a preliminary price from the floor plan and photos of the frontage, and the final cost is set after the measured survey, once the project scope is agreed.

Stages and timelines

  1. Goods, equipment and rules

    2–4 days

We go through the range and the sales format, get equipment plans from the supplier, read the shopping centre's or residential complex's requirements, and measure the premises.

  2. Route and sales floor layout

    1–2 weeks

We draw the customer's route from the entrance to the till, place the shelving, fitting rooms and stockroom, and calculate the display in two or three options.

  3. Concept and shop window

    1–2 weeks

We choose materials and colours, the window type and its composition, and tie them in with the sign.

  4. 3D and shopping centre approval

    1–3 weeks

We show the entrance, the window and the sales floor in 3D, send the drawing package to the centre's technical department and make the changes it asks for.

  5. Working drawings

    2–3 weeks

We issue the lighting, the outlets for equipment, ceilings, wall elevations and retail furniture drawings.

  6. Materials list and ordering

    3–5 days

We compile the materials list, price the renovation estimate from it, and flag the shop window and the furniture with long lead times to be ordered first.

Local specifics in Batumi

Shops on the seafront and in the Old Town have two peaks in summer: in the daytime tourists head for the sea, and in the evening they stroll until late. The window of a shop like this is seen more often in the dark, so we design the composition for the evening: a lit backdrop, light on the main item, a view from the pavement without reflections of the street lamps.

In new builds the ground-floor glazing is usually installed by the developer, and the residential complex rules often don't allow you to change the profile or the frame colour, or to apply film. Then we build the window from the inside, behind that glass: we set the backdrop back from it so the glass can be cleaned, add a platform and our own light fittings, and draw the sign in the sizes the building permits. We ask for these rules before the concept.

By the sea the range changes with the season: beachwear and gifts for tourists in summer, and in winter what the city's residents need. Shelving with adjustable shelves and platforms on castors let you rearrange the sales floor in an evening, without a new design.

Materials and brands

We design made-to-measure retail furniture in moisture-resistant board with edge banding on every edge: it is wiped down every evening, and an unsealed edge swells in the damp off-season. The till drawers run on Blum or GTV hardware. The sales floor is laid in VitrA, Roca or Halcon porcelain tiles, with an anti-slip surface at the entrance, shop windows are on Asistal profiles, and walls are finished in Caparol washable paint with the tint code in the materials list.

In the specification we describe light fittings by their characteristics: colour rendering, beam angle, colour temperature, glare control. We choose the brand to suit the budget, but keep one range for the whole sales floor, so that the light doesn't vary in tint. Sockets in platforms and floor boxes are specified as ABB, Schneider Electric or Legrand.

What makes up the cost

Timeline: 4–7 weeks to working drawings for a 60–100 m² shop; approval by the shopping centre runs in parallel

  • how many renders are needed for approval

What raises the cost

  • made-to-measure retail furniture and a till counter with detail drawings
  • a closed shop window with platforms, a backdrop and its own lighting
  • approval of the design by the shopping centre's technical department
  • a showroom with a grid of floor boxes and displays with running water

What lowers the cost

  • the supplier's ready-made equipment to its own plan
  • a small sales floor of simple shape without columns

Guarantees

The contract sets out how revisions and errors are handled.

The number of revision rounds at each stage is fixed before work starts. If on site the supplier's shelving turns out larger than in the catalogue, or a column isn't where the shopping centre's plan shows it, the designer corrects the sheet, and the made-to-measure furniture goes into production from the corrected drawing. Who is responsible for a drawing error found during construction is also written into the contract.

Questions and answers

How much does shop design cost in Batumi?

A design project for a shop or showroom costs from 93 to 130 ₾ per m². This price covers the sales floor layout and the customer route, the shop window, lighting, 3D and working drawings with retail furniture. Retail equipment, the sign and the renovation are priced separately. If you only need an idea for the landlord or partners, you can order a concept ahead of the full project from 1,680 ₾.

We give a preliminary price from the floor plan and photos of the frontage. The final cost is set after the measured survey, once the project scope is agreed: how many 3D views and pieces of made-to-measure furniture you need.

How do you design a small shop so it doesn't feel cramped?

Less stock at eye level and more space at the entrance. On a 20–30 m² sales floor we put tall shelving along the walls and only low tables in the middle, so that the whole floor can be seen from the door. A pale floor and ceiling make the space feel larger, and a mirror on the end wall makes it look longer.

We move reserve stock to the stockroom or to closed cupboards under the shelves, and keep the till compact, without a separate counter in the middle of the floor. We aim the light at the walls and the goods: lit walls make a room feel wider than a bright fitting in the middle of the ceiling.

How often should a shop window display be changed?

Usually with every new collection and for holidays, and for shops in Batumi's tourist areas also before the summer season. Passers-by stop noticing a window that stays the same for months, even those who walk past every day.

So that a change takes an evening rather than a week, we build everything it needs into the design: a lighting track with movable fittings, sockets in the platform, hanging points, storage for props. Compositions for different seasons can be drawn in advance, and then the staff put the window together from the sheet.

Does a shop in a shopping centre need a design project if the centre has its own requirements?

Yes. The centre's requirements set the limits: what you can do with the shopfront and the sign, which materials are allowed, how to connect to its alarm system and sprinklers. Within those limits, the sales floor layout, lighting and furniture are still decided by the design, and that has to happen before the equipment is ordered.

Besides, the centre's technical department usually asks for a layout, a render of the frontage and load diagrams before the renovation starts. We put this package together from the same project and incorporate the centre's comments before the working drawings are issued, so that they don't have to be redone.

How does showroom design differ from shop design?

In a shop the customer takes the goods and leaves, while in a showroom they choose something that will be delivered later: a kitchen, a sofa, tiles, sanitaryware. So a showroom design gives more space to room sets and to a consultation area with a sample table, a screen and a meeting room, and the stockroom almost disappears.

A showroom's display changes with the suppliers' collections. On the layout we draw the room sets as small rooms and leave spare sockets and fixing points for each one: a season later another set will stand in its place. We price a showroom design on the same line as a shop.
