Asphalt shingles in Batumi: deck, installation and prices
We lay asphalt shingles in Batumi on a continuous ventilated deck of moisture-resistant OSB with underlay over the whole roof, and we bond the rows at the eaves and ridge against wind. They suit complex roofs with valleys and bays and attics where quiet in a downpour matters. An asphalt shingle roof with materials starts from 270 ₾ per m².

Asphalt shingles in Batumi: where they fit
Asphalt shingles are strips of fibreglass mat soaked in bitumen, with mineral granules on top and an adhesive strip underneath. Asphalt shingles in Batumi are a good choice where the roof has a complex shape: turrets, bays, many valleys and hips. They are cut on site in small pieces, and there is less waste than with sheet coverings. Their second advantage is quiet: on a continuous deck a downpour is barely heard, which is why they are often chosen over attic bedrooms.
There is nothing in them to rust, and for houses by the sea that is a plus. Metal on such a roof remains only in trims, valleys and gutters, and for those we use a coating suited to coastal conditions.
Which shingles to choose
| Type | How it is made | Where we use it |
|---|---|---|
| Single-layer | One layer with cut-outs | Outbuildings, gazebos, saunas |
| Laminated (multi-layer) | Two or three layers bonded at the factory, textured pattern | Houses, especially by the sea and in wind |
| Ridge and starter | Separate pieces for the first row and the ridge | On every roof; we do not cut them from field shingles |
Laminated shingles are heavier and lie tighter on the slope, so wind lifts them less easily. For houses in Adjara we offer them, and keep single-layer shingles for small buildings. For a chalet with steep slopes and a complex shape, shingles are often the best choice; see the chalet houses page.
Base: deck and underlay
Shingles need a continuous, even deck. Usually it is moisture-resistant OSB-3 or plywood 12–18 mm thick depending on rafter spacing, with boards laid with about a 3 mm gap for expansion and staggered joints. Under the deck there must be a ventilated gap from eaves to ridge: in a damp winter an unventilated board soaks up water and swells, and the shingles above it ripple.
An underlay goes on the deck. Manufacturers allow underlay only at the eaves and valleys on steep slopes, but in Batumi, with its downpours and side wind, we lay it over the whole roof. At valleys and eaves the underlay is reinforced, and at walls and chimneys it runs up under the flashing.
Laying and fixing against wind
Shingles are laid from bottom to top starting with the starter row, each fixed with ring-shank galvanised nails, usually 4 nails per shingle and 6 on steep slopes and windy sites. The adhesive strip bonds in the sun's heat, so in the cooler months and at the eaves, ridge and gables we also bond the rows with bitumen cement. We lay only in dry weather and on a dry deck.
Valleys are made open, with a metal strip or valley underlay, or closed, with shingles trimmed along the line. An open valley carries a large flow of water from long slopes better, a closed one looks neater. We decide by slope length and roof shape. If you want to keep the existing rafters on an old house, we inspect them first: weak rafters are strengthened for the heavier deck, as described on the roof framing page.
Maintenance
Shingles need an inspection once a year and after strong storms: we check whether shingles have come unstuck at the eaves and ridge and whether valleys are clogged with leaves. A single damaged shingle is replaced without stripping its neighbours, so it is worth keeping a few spare packs from the same batch in the loft. If the shingles are already losing granules and leak in several places, the options are covered on the roof repair page.
How much asphalt shingles cost
An asphalt shingle roof with materials on existing rafters costs from 270 ₾ per m²: continuous deck, underlay, laminated shingles, ridge and starter pieces and junctions. If you supply the material, installation starts from 47 ₾ per m². A continuous OSB deck with underlay as a separate line starts from 57 ₾ per m², a PVC gutter system from 75 ₾ per linear metre of eaves. The final price is set after measuring the roof, once the estimate is agreed.

Local specifics in Batumi
Downpours in Batumi often come with strong wind, and water runs up the slope under the shingle laps. So on low-pitched sections, below 18°, we lay a double underlay and bond the rows fully rather than in spots. At the eaves we fit a drip edge with a wide flange so water does not reach the edge of the deck.
In summer dark shingles on a south slope get so hot that the bitumen softens. You cannot walk on them in the heat, so installation and all roof work after handover are planned for the morning. If air conditioners or aerials are going on the roof, we move them to the walls so nobody has to walk across the shingles to reach them.
Materials and brands
Laminated shingles on fibreglass with basalt granules, ridge and starter pieces from the same range. Deck of OSB-3 or moisture-resistant plywood, underlay on a bitumen-polymer base, and in valleys a valley membrane or coated steel. Ring-shank galvanised nails with wide heads, bitumen cement from the same manufacturer. A ventilated ridge, with roof vents where the ridge is short.

Questions and answers
How much do asphalt shingles with installation cost in Batumi?
An asphalt shingle roof with materials on existing rafters costs from 270 ₾ per m²: OSB deck, underlay, shingles and ridge and starter pieces. If the shingles are already bought, installation starts from 47 ₾ per m². Rafters, insulation and gutters are extra. The final price is set after measuring, once the estimate is agreed.
What is the minimum pitch for asphalt shingles?
Manufacturers usually allow from 12°. On such low slopes in Batumi we lay a double underlay and bond the rows fully, because wind drives the rain under the shingles. Shingles work most comfortably on a pitch from 18–20°.
Why have the shingles gone wavy?
Usually the deck is to blame. If boards were laid without gaps, they expand with moisture and buckle. If there is no ventilation under the deck, the board takes on water in winter and swells. Sometimes the cause is shingles laid on a wet base. The only fix is to strip the area and replace the deck.
Can asphalt shingles be laid in winter?
Winters in Batumi are mild, and on dry days you can lay them, but the adhesive strip bonds poorly in the cool. So in winter we bond every row with cement and keep the packs warm until laying. We never lay in rain or on a wet deck in any season.
How long do asphalt shingles last by the sea?
It depends on the range: laminated shingles last noticeably longer than single-layer ones, and manufacturers give them a longer warranty. Lifespan is cut by overheating without ventilation under the deck, walking on the roof in the heat and clogged valleys. A yearly inspection and clean valleys extend it more than choosing an expensive range.
