Solar panels for a house in Georgia: systems, batteries, installation

We install solar panels for a house in Georgia after calculating the yield for the specific plot: a grid-tied system for savings, a hybrid with batteries for backup or off-grid for mountains without a line. Roof fixings are designed for wind and seismic loads, and by the sea we use only aluminium and stainless steel. A turnkey 5 kW solar system from 15 600 ₾.

Solar panels for a house in Georgia: what they give

A rooftop solar system covers part of the house's consumption during the day, and with batteries it also keeps the house running during outages. Solar panels for a house in Georgia perform differently depending on location: the east of the country gets more sun, while Batumi has more cloudy and rainy days, especially in autumn and winter. So we calculate the yield for your plot and show honestly how much the system will give in summer and how much in winter, not just in the best month.

Types of system

SystemHow it worksWhen it fits
Grid-tiedWorks together with the grid, no batteriesLower bills, outages are rare
HybridGrid, panels and batteries togetherSavings plus backup during outages
Off-gridNo grid, everything on batteriesA mountain plot without a power line

Grid connection

Grid-tied and hybrid systems are connected to the Energo-Pro Georgia network under the regulator's rules, with an application and metering of generation. We check the crediting terms and paperwork at the time of application: they change, and we will not promise a specific scheme in advance. If the system only supplies the house without exporting to the grid, the paperwork is simpler, but surplus in summer is lost.

Roof and fixing by the sea

  • facing south, south-east or south-west, without shade from trees and neighbours;
  • aluminium and stainless steel fixings, no galvanised parts by the sea;
  • fixings designed for sea wind and seismic loads;
  • every roof penetration sealed, waterproofing intact;
  • on a flat roof, ballasted frames or anchors to the design.

If the roof is still being built, fixing points are prepared in advance, so the covering will not have to be opened. The cable from the panels to the inverter runs in a protected duct, and the inverter goes in a cool place rather than a scorching loft. How the roof itself is built is described on the roofing works page.

Batteries and backup

Lithium iron phosphate batteries last longer than lead-acid ones and tolerate deep discharge. We size capacity by what must keep running during an outage: boiler, well pump, fridge, lighting, router. Heating and air conditioners will not run long on batteries, so for large loads the backup is supplemented by a generator, more on the backup power page.

The sun for hot water

The quickest way to use the sun is a solar water heater on the roof. In summer it covers almost all hot water, and in winter the cylinder tops it up. The alternative is a heat pump water heater, which works in any weather. A rooftop system and a heat pump together make the most economical house.

How much solar panels cost

A turnkey 5 kW rooftop solar system costs from 15 600 ₾: panels, inverter, fixings and connection. A 10 kW system from 27 600 ₾, a 10 kWh battery with hybrid inverter from 14 400 ₾. A 200–300 L solar water heater installed from 3 900 ₾, a heat pump water heater from 6 900 ₾. The network company's connection paperwork fee is not included in our prices. The final cost is set after the yield calculation and an agreed estimate.

Local specifics in Batumi

Batumi is one of the rainiest cities in Georgia, and a solar system here produces less than in Tbilisi or Kakheti. Summer yield is good, winter yield drops noticeably. So for a house by the sea we size the system primarily for summer loads, air conditioners and hot water, and rely on the grid in winter.

Sea wind and salt load the fixings, and galvanised fixings near the shore rust. We use aluminium profiles and stainless bolts, and rinse the panels of salt and dust once a season. In the mountains, where there is more sun and power lines are long, a hybrid system with batteries is especially useful as backup.

Materials and brands

Monocrystalline solar panels with a manufacturer's output warranty, grid-tied and hybrid inverters, lithium iron phosphate batteries. Aluminium profiles and stainless steel fixings, ballasted frames for flat roofs. Solar cable and connectors, surge protection on the panel and grid side, meters for generation. Thermosiphon solar water heaters.

What makes up the cost

Timeline: a home solar system usually takes 4–8 weeks including delivery, installation 3–7 days

  • system output

What raises the cost

  • batteries and a hybrid inverter
  • a complex roof and high installation
  • ballasted frames on a flat roof
  • a long cable to the panel

What lowers the cost

  • a simple pitched roof facing south
  • a grid-tied system without batteries

Questions and answers

How much do solar panels for a house in Georgia cost?

A turnkey 5 kW rooftop solar system costs from 15 600 ₾, a 10 kW system from 27 600 ₾. A 10 kWh battery with hybrid inverter from 14 400 ₾. The final cost is set after the yield calculation and an agreed estimate.

Do solar panels make sense in Batumi?

It depends on the house's consumption and the grid connection terms. Batumi gets less sun than eastern Georgia, so the annual savings are lower. A system works best in a house with many air conditioners and much hot water in summer. We show a month-by-month calculation before purchase.

Can surplus be exported to the grid?

A system can be connected to the Energo-Pro Georgia network with generation metering under the regulator's rules. How surplus is credited and which documents are needed, we check at the time of application, because the terms change. We do not promise a specific crediting scheme in advance.

Will the house have power during a grid outage?

Only if the system is hybrid, with batteries. A grid-tied system also switches off during a grid outage, as a safety requirement. We size battery capacity by what must keep running: boiler, pump, fridge, lighting and router. The switch to batteries takes a fraction of a second, and appliances barely notice it.

Will the panels withstand wind and earthquakes?

We design the fixings for wind loads by the sea and for seismic loads, using aluminium profiles and stainless bolts. On flat roofs we use ballasted frames or anchors to the design. Roof penetrations are sealed so that leaks do not appear, and after the first winter we check bolt tightness and the condition of the fixings.
