Boho interior design in Batumi: textures instead of clutter

We build boho interior design in Batumi on a calm base: light walls, warm wood, closed storage. The style comes from a few large textured pieces (a rattan armchair, linen curtains, a rug, ceramics) and one place for your collection. Small things on every surface, a dozen cushions and wicker baskets in a bathroom by the sea soon collect dust and damp, so we count them at the design stage. A full design project with a mood collage costs from 145 ₾ per m².

Where boho comes from and what we keep

Boho takes its name from bohemia: this is how artists and travellers lived, their homes built up over the years from things brought from different countries. Rugs, ceramics, wicker furniture, plants, fabrics with ethnic patterns and books stand side by side, with no matching sets. That is why real boho is hard to buy in one go in a shop: its basis is your own things and the way they are arranged.

In an apartment by the sea, boho has to be kept in check. The warm earthy palette, natural textures, handmade pieces and greenery stay, while the number of objects on open surfaces, the layers of textiles and the open storage are limited at the design stage. Without that, boho in a one-bedroom (1+1) apartment turns within a season into a store of cushions and baskets that nobody has time to dust.

Base, large pieces and small things

We work in layers, from simple to complex. The base is the walls, floor, doors and built-in wardrobes. It is calm and closed: light paint or plaster in a warm tone, a wooden floor or wood-effect porcelain tiles, wardrobes with no open shelves. This is where the suitcases, the vacuum cleaner, spare linen and anything else that spoils the picture go.

On top of the base go four to six large textured pieces for the whole apartment: a rattan armchair, a wicker headboard, a large rug, linen curtains, a wooden table, a clay lamp. They create the style, they show in photos, and they are easy to keep clean.

Small things, that is ceramics, books, baskets, candles and dried branches, get places of their own: a lit shelving unit, one shelf above the sofa, a windowsill. The design lists these places, and whatever doesn't fit on them stays in a closed cupboard. The collection is on show, and cleaning takes minutes.

Low furniture, hanging pieces and floor-to-ceiling windows

Boho likes low furniture: a low-seated sofa, a bed on a platform, poufs. Under the modest ceiling of a new build this is a plus, as the room feels taller. We keep floor cushions as an addition to the sofa rather than the main place for guests to sit: on porcelain tiles it is cold to sit in winter.

A hanging chair and hanging planters are fixed to the floor slab above, not to a stretch ceiling or plasterboard. We choose the fixing point on the ceiling plan, select an anchor rated for a person's weight with a margin, and before drilling check that no cable runs at that spot. Under a stretch ceiling the fixing plate goes in before the membrane is fitted.

Trailing plants in macramé hangers by a floor-to-ceiling window look best of all in boho, but the summer sun through the glass scorches them, watering at height is awkward, and the water ends up on the floor. We hang planters where you can reach them, with a drip tray inside, and for the sunny side choose plants that tolerate direct light.

Rattan, wicker, jute and macramé by the sea

MaterialWhat happens to it in BatumiWhat we do
Rattan and wicker furnitureAbsorbs moisture in a damp winter, then dries out and cracks under the air conditioner in summerWe place it away from the air conditioner's airflow, varnish it and use synthetic rattan on the balcony
Woven cane on cabinet doorsNatural cane sags in damp weather and tightens in dry weatherWe use polymer cane on the fronts and keep natural cane for a headboard or a screen
Jute and sisal on the floorAbsorb water and smell, and stains hardly ever come outWe lay them only in the bedroom or living room, and in the hallway and kitchen use synthetic rugs with a jute-look weave
Macramé and cotton tasselsCollect dust and moisture and turn yellow over timeOne or two pieces on an internal wall, washed once a season
Dried flowers and grassesLose their shape and shed in damp airOne vase on display instead of a scattering across every shelf

Colour, fabrics and lighting

The boho palette is earthy: terracotta, ochre, mustard, olive, sand, cream, dark wood. We usually keep the walls light and let the fabrics, the rug and the ceramics bring the colour, otherwise a small room with terracotta walls feels cramped by evening. One wall can be coloured, behind the sofa or the bed.

We choose fabrics on one list together with the large pieces, so that colours and patterns come together before you buy, not on the sofa. How fabrics cope with a damp winter and with washing is covered in detail on the page about textiles and decor.

Boho lighting is built from many warm sources: wicker pendants, a floor lamp by the armchair, lamps on shelves, a string of lights over the bed. Each needs its own socket or switch, and we draw their positions on the electrical plan: high up by the shelving unit, above the bedhead, by the window. Otherwise the string lights hang from extension leads, and the cables show in every photo. How lighting circuits and scenes are put together is described on the page about lighting design. In wicker shades we use LED bulbs, which barely warm the cane.

Boho in a short-term rental apartment

In a listing, boho stands out among identical white apartments, but keeping it tidy between guests is harder than with minimalism. Guests move small decor around, drop it and sometimes take it home with them, and whoever cleans between stays has no time to put twenty objects back in their places. So in an apartment like this the style is carried by things that don't move: a wicker headboard, a woven light, a rug, curtains, a shelf with the ceramics fixed in place.

We keep only a few small things and attach a decor layout with photos to the design: with it, a room can be returned to the listing photo in a few minutes. Other decisions for apartments like this, such as where to keep the linen and where a guest puts a suitcase, are covered on the page about design for short-term rental apartments.

What boho is mixed with and where it goes wrong

Pure boho is rare in a new build; more often it is laid over another base. With Scandinavian style it makes a light interior with warm textures, from mid-century it borrows furniture on slim legs, with Mediterranean style it shares white walls and tiles, and on the calm base of an eco style interior it lasts longest of all. We don't combine it with minimalism or high-tech: they need empty surfaces, and boho fills them. Common mistakes:

  • decor bought before the design, with no place found for half of it;
  • several small rugs on tiles that slide and catch on the door;
  • a rug on a rug in an apartment that stands empty in winter, with damp building up under the top layer;
  • a hanging chair on a plasterboard ceiling with no fixing to the slab;
  • open kitchen shelves crammed with ceramics right next to the hob;
  • wicker laundry baskets in a bathroom without an extractor fan.

How much a boho interior costs in Batumi

In boho the design costs 145 to 190 ₾ per m², and that is the designer's work: the layout, 3D visualisation, working drawings and a mood collage from which the shopping list is later put together. If the renovation is simple and only the look of a room is needed, the collage can be ordered on its own, from 330 to 480 ₾ per room. How a collage differs from 3D and when one of them is enough is explained in the comparison of 3D visualisation and a collage.

After the design, most of the money in boho goes on textiles and decor, which are priced separately. A textiles and decor package for a 1+1 apartment, with the curtains hung, costs from 4,200 to 6,600 ₾, and made-to-measure tailored curtains from 200 to 300 ₾ per linear metre of rail. It comes out cheaper when your own things from your previous home and ready-made curtains go into the interior. The final cost is set after the measured survey and once the list is agreed.

Stages and timelines

  1. Going through your things

    2–3 days

    We look at what you already have: rugs, ceramics, furniture. We measure whatever will move to the new apartment and decide what to keep.

  2. Layout and storage

    1–2 weeks

    We place the low furniture and closed cupboards, set aside one place for the collection and check the walkways.

  3. Mood collage

    1 week

    We bring the palette, fabrics and large pieces together on one sheet and work out how much textile is really needed.

  4. 3D with textures

    1–2 weeks

    We show the rooms with textiles and plants, so you can see where there are already too many things.

  5. Drawings and fixings

    2–3 weeks

    A ceiling plan with the fixings, electrics with sockets for the lighting, and elevations of the shelving unit and kitchen.

  6. Textiles and decor list

    1 week

    A list with prices and delivery times, a decor layout for cleaning and notes on where each of your things goes.

Local specifics in Batumi

In summer in Batumi the windows and balcony door are often left open, and the draught from the sea sways everything that hangs: planters, macramé, string lights, light lanterns. We fix hanging pieces by a window at two points or move them away from the opening, and we don't hang a hanging chair on the way to the balcony, where both the door and the wind push it.

We don't put rattan furniture and baskets right up against an external wall or a window. Condensation forms there in winter, the weave on the wall side gets damp first, and in an empty apartment nobody notices until spring. We leave a few centimetres between the furniture and the wall for air.

On an open balcony on a high floor, the wind blows away cushions, throws and lanterns, and the sun bleaches them within a season. For the balcony we choose outdoor fabrics and things that can be put away in a cupboard, and we check the building's rules on what may be hung on the railing.

Materials and brands

We choose wicker furniture from suppliers by close-up photos of the weave: even, dense cane with no loose ends keeps its shape longer. For the balcony and bathroom we use outdoor synthetic rattan made of polymer strip, which can be washed down with the shower.

For walkways we choose synthetic rugs with a jute-look weave or a short pile. Fabrics are cotton and linen with some polyester, so that they shrink less in the wash. For a hanging chair we use a concrete anchor with a rated load in its specifications and a hanger marked with its permitted weight.

What makes up the cost

Guarantees

Collage, 3D and drawing revision rounds are set in the contract.

If on site a fixing for the hanging chair lands on a cable or the edge of the slab, the designer moves it on the drawing before the ceiling is stretched, and the procedure for correcting errors is set out in the contract. Furniture, fabrics and light fittings carry the manufacturer's or seller's warranty.

Questions and answers

How much does boho interior design cost in Batumi?

The design itself costs 145 to 190 ₾ per m²: the layout, 3D, working drawings and a mood collage. That is the designer's work only. For one room without renovation a collage is sometimes enough, and it costs from 330 ₾ per room.

Things are priced separately, and in boho this part of the budget is noticeable: a textiles and decor package for a 1+1 apartment, with the curtains hung, costs from 4,200 ₾. Your rugs, ceramics and furniture from your previous apartment bring that sum down considerably. The final cost is set after the measured survey and once the scope of the design and the shopping list are agreed.

Can you create a boho interior without renovation, just with furniture and textiles?

You can, if the base is already calm: light walls, a neutral floor, closed wardrobes. Then boho is put together from a rug, curtains, a wicker armchair and a pendant light, ceramics and plants, and that is a job for a decorator rather than a renovation. We draw up the list of things from the collage, so that the purchases add up to one picture.

Without renovation, the lighting is harder: new sockets for string lights and floor lamps and a ceiling point for a pendant need chasing into the walls. We make do with what is there or choose lights with a plug. A hanging chair can be hung in a finished apartment too, if an anchor can reach the floor slab.

Does boho suit an apartment with small children?

It does, if you choose sturdy things. We pick a wicker armchair with a dense weave on a rigid frame, hang macramé and hanging planters higher than a child can reach, and lay synthetic rugs that can be washed. Floor cushions get removable covers, and heavy planters stand on stable bases.

Where children play, we hang a hanging chair with plenty of space around it, so that when it swings it doesn't reach the wall, the window or furniture. If you have pets, we choose wicker furniture and plants with them in mind too, and check plants for safety before buying them.

How do you combine different prints in boho style?

Through a shared colour. We choose two or three colours that repeat in every pattern: for example, terracotta and ochre appear in the rug, in the cushions and in the throw. Then different ornaments read as one story rather than a jumble sale.

The second rule concerns scale. There is one large pattern, usually on the rug, a medium one on the curtains or bedspread, a small one on the cushions, and everything else is plain. We check the combination on the collage before buying: fabric looks different on screen and in your hands, so we attach photos of the samples in daylight to the collage.

How is boho different from eco style?

They share materials: wood, linen, rattan, jute, plants. Eco style is calm and restrained, with few things, natural colours and almost no pattern. Boho mixes colours, ornaments, handmade pieces and objects from travels, and has more layers.

In an apartment by the sea, eco style is easier to look after: there are fewer textiles and small things to collect dust and moisture. So we often create an eco base and add boho through a rug, fabrics and ceramics, which are easy to change if you tire of the style.
